Oh, man! I read this book, I think. I can't remember the name, either though. Is this also the one where the trip they go on is kind of like compulsory? Like they can't even seem to remember making plans to go?
This kind of reminds me of a movie I've seen but I don't know if its based on a book. I'll look for it and check.
I'm going to keep looking for it because now I HAVE to know if it's the same book. And if its not, then they are extremely similar.
I'm not sure about the book but the author may be Christopher Pike, he wrote young adult horror in the 80s and 90s. It sounds like his kind of plot. Good luck!
R.L. Stine is another author that comes to mind, or the Point Horror series - www.goodreads.com/series/52323-point-...
Amy, is this book for young adults?
Where are they vacationing - remote cabin, large resort, beach, mountains, etc.?
About how many people are in the group?

I don't think it is Christopher Pike or R.L. Stine. I did read a lot of their books growing up, and I've gone back through the list, but didn't see any that really fit.The book had a lot of the feel of the books written by Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine for their older audiences. I'm thinking high school aged.
I'm not 100% on where they were, that's part of the problem. I remember them being next to the ocean, with a forest around them. I keep thinking it was an island of some sort. Thinking back, I get the impression that it was a multi-building location that was relatively remote.
I think there were 6 in the group. I believe it was 3 couples.
Richie Tankersley Cusick, Diane Hoh, Caroline B. Cooney are some others you might want to check out. It sounds very much in the realm of Christopher Pike and all of those. The only problem is there were a lot of YA horror writers in the '90s and some of them were one shot writers. I'll dig through more of what i've got.Edit: Just found one more called Class Trip by Bebe Faas Rice and maybe give these two a try Joan Lowery Nixon and D.E. Athkins.

That was one of the main things I remember, that the characters kept seeing dopplegangers of each other from the 60s, as if this had all happened before and they were echoing the deaths in the past.
You're talking about "Nightmare Inn" by T.S. Rue (aka Todd Strasser). There were three other books in the series: "Room 13", "The Pool" and "The Attic".

I remember the MC encountering a doppelganger of one of the other characters, except they were hippie-ish.
I read this somewhere around 1996, and it might have been a late 80s or early 90s book.
I know it's not a lot to go on. >.<
