spoiler alert, the likes and dislikes

Just finished "Clear" and I wanted to find others who also enjoyed it. So I thought others could share what they liked and didn't like about it.

I genuinely enjoyed the book. I loved the way Davies compared everything to the rough seas, the birds, the terrain. It was such a beautiful way of showing you the stark beautiful of this fictional island.

But the ending felt flat. All this build up and then they just rode off into the sunset. It felt rushed and kind of disappointing.

Anyway, what did you enjoy? Do you agree with my interpretation of the ending?

I certainly understand why you felt that the ending was "flat" BUT I did not feel that way. I think it was a deep challenge to us all to try to bring grace and creativity and nuance to bear on challenges that our tribes tell us are black and white. I felt like she elevated the book (and those of us reading it) beyond the expected into grace.

I did not feel that it was rushed. I was genuinely moved when three people who loved each other left together even though it is not clear how they will resolve the issue. I thought it was very life-affirming and optimistic that they chose to leave together.

I half-expected the novel's setting to be contained around the cabin so that abrupt ending wasn't so bad. Plus, I'm looking at her other books, at least one other is short, 162 pages, and there are short stories. She keeps it short, Clear is a a sweet read.

I agree the ending seemed rushed and unfinished. Though it seemed logical, the whole "whatever" vibe from Mary, after she followed her husband to the wilds of nowhere, jarred my brain.

In many ways, it felt I was being set up for a sequel.
