Grace | 52 comments Requested All the Light We Cannot See from the library and will read for #7, #10, #12 (pronoun in title, historical fiction, on TBR for more than 1 year)

I'm always skeptical when beginning to read books that received the Pulitzer Prize. I have read some in the past and thought, "How could this book have received the Pulitzer Prize. However, after reading this book, which was a five-star award from me, I understood. This book is what future classics become.

I agree with being skeptical about the Pulitzer Prize winners. I think that's why this one All the Light We Cannot See has been on my TBR for so long. Happy to know you appreciated the read. Thanks for commenting!

Grace | 52 comments I'm starting from where we are since I haven't been good at tracking the ATY prompts. So, we are finishing Week 27 and starting 28.
27. A book related to land
28. A book related to sea
29. A book related to air
Currently I'm reading Iron Flame (The Empyrean, #2) by Rebecca Yarros
It seems to satisfy all three and at 600+ pages it will take me through the 3 weeks to finish 🙃.
I loved Fourth Wing which I read earlier this year and why I got on the NYPL lend list for Iron Flame. It is a two week borrow only (newer fiction) so I need to focus and finish. Won't be too hard.

message 7: by Grace (new)

Grace | 52 comments Got Covid and while stuck at home and not working, I finished Iron Flame (The Empyrean, #2) by Rebecca Yarros . Loved it almost as much as Fourth Wing (The Empyrean, #1) by Rebecca Yarros although the battle scenes were a little boring. Cliffhanger at the end so am excited for #3 in the series. I think it is not supposed to be out until January 2025.
Meanwhile I started Paladin’s Grace (The Saint of Steel, #1) by T. Kingfisher , a book recommended to me by my nephew. I am loving the characters and the writing so far. Having Grace in the title is an extra bonus.

message 8: by Grace (new)

Grace | 52 comments For Week #27 "Land," I noted Gray Mountain by John Grisham since it involved an environmental conflict over mining and destruction of a mountain (pretty decent Grisham read as they go). I read it in January 2024.
I'll use Iron Flame for "Air" since lots of fighting on dragon back in the air!
The two for "Sea" just came in for me at my library. They are:
📚 The House in the Cerulean Sea (Cerulean Chronicles, #1) by T.J. Klune
📚 Other Minds by Peter Godfrey-Smith
Completing either of the above has me back on track and ready for prompt #30, "A book in a country bordering the Mediterranean." Need to research my TBR and pick a good one!

message 9: by Grace (new)

Grace | 52 comments Continuing with where I am, I'm on to prompt #30, a book set in a country bordering the Mediterranean Sea, and I have chosen Circe Circe by Madeline Miller . I'm pleased to find it in my TBR and on top of the group's Listopia for the prompt. I am already behind pace so my plan is to read Circe as quickly as possible, skip the next prompt 31 (going for the gold) since it doesn't interest me so much and try to get on track for the start of Week #32, a book with a number in the title. Really happy to be reading at least a little every day!

message 10: by Grace (new)

Grace | 52 comments Ok, Re-doing my approach once again. I'm into the challenge of it all! Putting Circe by Madeline Miller on hold because i have too many books in progress and needed to make some choices. I will come back to it, because a sample was enough to know i am going to love it!

message 11: by Grace (new)

Grace | 52 comments It is Sunday, 8.4.2024. I recently started using the community spreadsheet to track my progress, and become more familiar with the prompts. I'm working on filling in my currently in progress and already read in 2024 to prompts they fit.
Today, I matched Other Minds by Peter Godfrey-Smith to Prompt #8 - a book by an author from Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Yay.

message 12: by Grace (new)

Grace | 52 comments It is Friday, 8.9.2024. I like the spreadsheet approach and will simply realign and designate from the books i've read this year. I'm putting in notes so that i remember which prompt to match. There are many overlapping and it has felt paralyzing to plug in here and there, and rethink because oh no, i need the match there. Pretty much will be going in order, but backtracking to fill in lots of blanks.
________
I will finish Other Minds this weekend. It has been a challenging read in that the science and philosophy present complicated concepts in areas of knowledge where there is much research and theory. I must reason along with Peter Godfrey-Smith. Enjoying the challenge and the learning.
Peter Godfrey-Smith is from Australia.

Grace | 52 comments It is Saturday, August 24. Restarting and re-listing from the beginning. I'm reading so much more than I have in years, inspired by ATY 52. I might even make it to 52, but not editing my commitment to that just yet! Will copy and paste the list in a separate message with book and prompt links. It might be a little while. I am keeping up with the community spreadsheet.

Grace | 52 comments Date: 1.1.2025 - updating so i can copy and paste the full challenge into the completed thread!
Date: 12.14.2024
46/52 and 88%
-- Amazing. ATY52 2024 Challenge has so much fun. I've increased my reading so much, the prompts urge me on to try new genres and new (to me) authors. Thank you mods and frequent posters too. I'll post once more around end of year to update. I am trying for 52, but with 6 to go, I'm not sure I'm going to make it. I added 4 of the 6 yet to go because i've already started them.

Date: 10.27.2024
36/52 ~ 69% ~ Woohoo!!
I'm re-doing my list of 52 on 10.27.2024. My year to date goal is still to complete all 52 this calendar year 2024. I've been going back and forth refitting my books to prompts. There are spaces to fill and more rearranging, so this list is not complete even to what i've read to date. I will try to continue to update and edit this post more frequently, but i am itching to do some planning for 2025. Pretty excited about the #of books I've read this year. Even if i don't get to 52, i have learned, enjoyed, and provided meaning to my time spent living. The Community Spreadsheet is the authority!

2024 ATY 52 is a wrap! The full list is edited into my message #15.

5 Star Books:
I had 17 or 18 -- am i too liberal with my five stars? Maybe. My absolute favorite? I cannot pick just one, but I'll say it is James by Percival Everett - it was really fabulous and now will read the rest of Percival Everett's writings.
