Book # 2 of The Gentleman Bastard #1-3.

Locke is in rough shape after the events of Book 1 and Jean has turned into the caregiver and rain maker. Locke wallows in his wine while Jean tries shaking him out of it. This part (and a few others further in) dragged for me. I blame my own head space, not the book.

The pair of con man move onto a new city/venture in hopes of swindling a huge score from a large, popular gambling establishment. Lynch in true form introduces interesting new characters and builds on the world he created. This story includes pirates, one of my favorites. Especially liked Lockes inclusion of women being an important part of this underworld.

Full of twists and surprises near the end and that raised it up to the 4th star.

Theresa | 16002 comments Thanks for the review. I have yet to read this and at some point this year I need to read a book about pirates for Popsugar. Glad to hear women show up more. One of my complaints about the first was how he did not give women a strong lasting role in the world.

Jen K | 3198 comments Good review and I preferred the second one, partly for the better role of women and also pirates.

I will keep an eye on a possible #3 read. ETA: Not looking to read #3 anytime soon...

KateNZ | 4156 comments I enjoyed this as well. I probably enjoyed the first book a little more simply because it was novel and this felt like more of the same. But #2 is actually a better book, I think - the characters are more settled and the plot is stronger. And yes, stronger women.

I think #3 is out, Jen (not that I’ve read it yet, according to GR) and it’s #4 that we’re waiting for.

Robin P | 6037 comments Yes, #3 is The Republic of Thieves from some years back. It wasn't as good because it seemed to be setting up future books. And a long part of it is a play that they all participate in that drags on too much. We finally get to see the mysterious Sabetha, though.

Lynch is dealing with mental health issues, I am not sure the 4th will be out anytime soon
