This is the thread for The Three Musketeers. I will not be reading it. If any of you readers want the book divided into sections like Gone with the Wind and Bleak House, please let me know by telling me a good way to divide it. Thanks.

Mochajunkie Hello, I'm new to the group. I tried reading this about a year ago and didn't get far. I was annoyed by the characters. That may be it's own discussion. I have started it a second time and it is going much better this time. Perhaps I was rushing through it last time… Any one else reading?

Well, 42 people voted for it, so I hope others are reading it.

message 4: by Myst (new)

Myst | 58 comments I need to download it to my kindle and I've got 3.5 books ahead of it out from the library. I hope to start next week.

message 5: by RitaSkeeter (new)

RitaSkeeter I'm also planning to start next week. I just want to get some library books finished first.

I'm reading the Pevear translation published by Penguin. What translations will you guys be reading? I found his translations of Russian authors very readable.

I'm not sure I've ever read Dumas before, though I have always had intentions to.

Hi Emily, my edition has 67 chapters so I wonder if an option is chapters 1-15; 16-30; 31-45; 45-67?

Not sure what other readers think? I think it can be useful to split up larger books otherwise discussion can get a bit confused.

message 7: by Susie (new)

Susie I'm planning on reading it, but probably won't start until the end of April...I have a couple others to read before I commit to this big read... :)

message 8: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle I've had a copy of this since I was about 10 so I might give it a try. I will probably start next week after I've finished my current assignment.

message 9: by Tania (new)

Tania I've never managed to actually participate in any of the reads with this group before, but have been trying to go at The Three Musketeers since January, so I'm really excited for this! Don't have access to my copy until next week, but I will be all over it! :)

message 10: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle I've just got my copy out and it's only 316 pages long so I guess it must be abridged so I will have to get another version.
This one has 56 chapters plus conclusion and epilogue.
Just out of interest I wonder how they've changed it. Can I compare a couple of things please?

So chapter one: the three presents of M. D'Arragnan the elder.
My first few words are: on the first Monday of the month of April....
Last word of chapter: in the kingdom, according to the estimation of his father.

Are others the same?

RitaSkeeter Hi Nicolle,
I have the Pevear translation published by Penguin - 673 pp, not including the notes at the end.

Chapter 1 starts: "On the first Monday of the month of April 1625, the village of Meung, where the author....."

Chapter 1 concludes: 'This sleep, still quite provincial, stayed with him till nine o'clock in the morning, at which hour he got up to go to this famous M. De Treville, the third personage of the realm in his father's estimation".

Chapter 1 is about 15 and a half pages long if that helps? There is also a preface a few pages long before the chapter stars.

Nicolle Yes I think mine is missing quite a bit. I will get hold of a copy of the full version. Thanks :)

message 13: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Just ordered copy so should arrive in next few days. Can't wait to start reading.

Ashley P. (ashhadans) I read this a couple months ago and enjoyed it. I didn't love it but there were some amusing parts. The Cardinal was my favorite character. He is such a jerk. I loved it :D

Myst | 58 comments I want to read it faster, but due to helping someone move I've hardly been home. Think I started C5 and stalled out due to no time.
