Hello all! I'm looking for recommendations for a single volume narrative political history that would cover the period of time from Charles I's trial until the Restoration. Something skin to the style of a CV Wedgwood or David Ogg. I'm familiar with Christopher Hill (all good stuff but too socio-economic Marxian for my taste) and Clarendon/Gardiner I find too exhaustive and exhausting, not to say expensive because of the many volumes. Are there any happy compromises to be read that are free of axe-grinding? I'd love to hear of any good reads, especially on the period of disintegration after Oliver's demise.

I do know that Antonia Fraser has a biography about Oliver Cromwell. I have not yet read it-but have read some of her other books and enjoyed them. Despite its being a bio and not specifically focused on political aspects, I am sure it would have some information you would find interesting.
Thanks for that Elizabeth. I'm afraid that fate has pre-empted you as it I have it (and enjoyed it very much) Sorry to appear ueber-picky but it falls shy of the Restoration, obviously, and I'm looking for something taking in the wider picture than the narrative of the man himself. That's not to say that it isn't a great suggestion.
