Nirkatze | 21448 comments Hoping to join this one... Very curious to see how Ryan does outside his usual bailiwick.

Felina | 2416 comments This one sounds like a creepfest.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1971 comments Omg Just saw your creep fest comment. I plan to start tomorrow. See you guys here!

Felina | 2416 comments I’m about 60% in and I feel like it’s a decent mystery but not really scary. It reminds me a lot of Kings The Regulators or Clines books we read last year except it’s missing any kind of vibe. There is no creep vibe which is essentially for turning mystery into horror. I’m not scared, just confused. I’m not saying it’s not interesting, it’s just not creepy or disturbing.

Felina | 2416 comments Finished. Ultimately this was a decent little mystery but it was certainly not horror. I felt little to nothing for the characters and was kinda just eager to get to the end. I was ready and prepared for horror. I was ready for Peter Clines, Stephen King or John Langan and what I got was R.L. Stine.

I’m sad I used up an audible credit for this TBH.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1971 comments I just started the first ten pages. Was a bit thrown since it has no fantasy element whatsoever since I got used to the author's other works.

Lowering my expectation after reading your thoughts.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1971 comments 32% in and it is rather boring, not much happening. I have read some techno thrillers like Clancy's and Forsyth's, which were more exciting. My Kindle says there are 50 minutes more so I plan to skim.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1971 comments Finished. Yeah this does not work for me. Agree with your assessment. I think Ryan should just focus on fantasy novels.

Felina | 2416 comments I’m curious to see what Nirkatze thinks.

Yeah, something about the story really comes off as been there, done that.

Nirkatze | 21448 comments I read this last week and enjoyed it fine. I wouldn't mind Ryan writing more things in this vein--everyone needs practice, right? But I do agree that it didn't wow me in any way, and I did find myself drifting off mentally while listening--not sure whether to blame that on the book or the fact that this is crunch time at work though.

I also agree that it kept reminding me of other things that did it better--the opening reminded me of Resident Evil, but as the story went on I got more Last Ship vibes or even Last of Us. No other book comparisons, but video game and TV, with more thought than thrill--how would the world react in this situation?

The book did make me laugh and smile at parts, and I was curious about the mystery. I wasn't expecting the ending to end on that note though, a little let down.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1971 comments Wow I completely missed the humour then. Glad you enjoyed it. I don't mind him writing modern stuff though, maybe some urban fantasy would be nice too.

Nirkatze | 21448 comments Mostly pop culture references and dry humor. Sadly can't remember anything specific at this point...
