Typically I steer clear of books of this genre (it’s a bit overdone these days…) but the synopsis caught my attention and I’m glad I decided to take it on.

The novel starts out with the discovery of an ancient pyramid that erupts on a mountainside in Peru. A private corporation has contracted with the Peruvian government to excavate and decipher its origins, hiring the best and brightest scientists; however things go badly from the start and get worse from there. The author uses a combination of ancient history and mythology to weave this well told story and his ability to tell the tale from different character viewpoints keeps the story interesting and moving.

Unfortunately, I really struggled with my rating on this book, it’s a fast paced thriller that was difficult to put down, but there were many editing errors and inconsistencies in parts of the storyline (example: the author is discussing the buildings in a village “Each stood atop short stilts to avoid the thick mud that came with the rains....” next page when they enter the building “blood had soaked the packed-earth floor…”) normally I have no problem overlooking minor errors, but for me these types of mistakes became more prolific as the story continued and it was quite distracting. However, this was a fantastic take on the genre that I thoroughly enjoyed; the characters and scenes were vivid and laid out well. You won’t regret picking this novel up and more likely than not, you’ll be purchasing the sequels!
