Spanning many different times and countries, this book tells the story of Marian, a female aviator who is determined to live the life she wants, and not listen to the men who tell her she can’t do something. We see part of Marian’s story through Hadley’s portrayal of her in a film. There are lots of secondary characters to this, and we also see a very detailed backstory for each of them, which unfortunately, adds very little to the plot. There was so much melodrama and trauma in this book, especially in the first 100 pages, that it was just too over-the-top, and from then on, the book felt a bit ridiculous at times. There were some strange sub-plots and lots of research that had been just shoe-horned in but didn’t really fit, which left me very disappointed with this book.
