We are off to North Carolina! Many thanks to our member Jillian, for creating this challenge for us!

Join us as we leave the mainland behind and travel to North Carolina’s Outer Banks Scenic Byway. This trip is filled with breathtaking views, flourishing wildlife, rich seafaring history, and tragedy. Enjoy the scenic views of barrier islands bracketed by the Atlantic Ocean and an estuarine system of shallow, fertile sounds on North Carolina’s Outer Banks Scenic Byway.

Here's how it work:
The number of miles traveled from place to place will be the numbers you use to choose your books. You can mix and match one of the below ways to complete the task but please indicate in each post which option you are using.

1. Starting Point: Wright Brothers National Memorial

Our trip begins just north of the byway in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved the first successful airplane flight on December 17, 1903. The Wright Brothers National Memorial site features reproductions of the Wright 1903 Powered Flyer, a replica of the 1902 Wright Glider and a 60-foot granite monument. Their scientific achievement has changed the modern world.

2. Drive 3 Miles to Nags Head Woods Preserve

Nags Head is filled with beaches, shops, restaurants, and attractions. Located just west of the beach is a hidden treasure of 1,400 acres of maritime forest including sand dunes, ponds, marshes and wetlands. It offers a break from the beaches and attractions. Visitors can relax as they explore the diverse plant and animal life located within the Outer Banks.

3. Drive 5 Miles to Jockey’s Ridge

Jockey’s Ridge State Park features the tallest sand dune on the Atlantic coast. It also features a desert experience due to the shifting sands, high wind, extreme temperatures, and a lack of water. In addition to the desert-like environment, it is also an estuarine because of the tidal waters of the Roanoke Sound. A sound is a small body of water connected to the sea or ocean.

4. Drive 4 Miles to Jennette’s Pier

Experience world-class pier fishing at Jennette’s Pier. All anglers are welcome and the pier’s education department offers classes ranging from beginner to advanced. All supplies needed for a successful day of fishing can be purchased or rented at the pier. In addition to fishing, there are several special events throughout the summer including volleyball and kayak competitions.

5. Drive 7 Miles to Bodie Island Lighthouse

Bodie Island Lighthouse has a rich history of guiding travelers’ through the channels and shoals of the Atlantic. The first Bodie Island Lighthouse was built in 1847 but was abandoned due to the poor foundation. The second Bodie Island Lighthouse was built in 1859 only to be burnt down in 1861 by the Confederates. The current Bodie Island Lighthouse was built in 1872 and boarders Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The 150 feet high light house is open to the public.

6. Drive 6 Miles to Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station

The current Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station was completed in 1898 and was originally built to aid mariners who became shipwrecked passing through the inlet. After the formation of the Coast Guard, Guardsmen were stationed at the facility. The station was closed in November 1988 due to deterioration. North Carolina Aquarium now owns the station with hopes to one day restore the station and use it as a research facility. It is closed to the public, but visitors may walk around the station and view the inlet and ocean.

7. Drive 4 Miles to Oriental Shipwreck

The Oriental was a Federal transport ship during the Civil War. Built in 1861, it was sunk in May of 1862 off the coast of Bodie Island. Depending on the tide, visitors to the Pea Island area can view the steam engine protruding from the waters.

8. Drive 0.5 Miles to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge boasts over 370 species. The refuge was established in 1938 to provide a habitat for migratory birds and endangered species. In addition to viewing the wildlife, Pea Island offers fishing opportunities, hiking, and guided tours. For a closer look at the marshes, explore the island and channel from a canoe or kayak.

9. Drive 9 Miles to Inn at Rodanthe

Nicholas Sparks’ popular novel, Nights in Rodanthe, featured The Inn at Rodanthe. This ocean front property offers a beautiful view of the Atlantic, but coastal storms threatened the structure of the 1980's building. In January of 2010, Expert House Movers were able to lift the 83,000 pound structure onto beams and transport the Inn to a nearby oceanfront property. The owners of the property have continued to work to preserve the structure and to emulate the decor of the movie, including using vintage 1920's wallpaper, movie props from the filming and maintaining the infamous blue shutters.

10. Drive 1 Mile to Rodanthe Pier

Rodanthe Pier is the furthest east and deepest pier on the Outer Banks. The pier is open during the summer from 6 AM to midnight. In the mornings, visitors can watch the beautiful sunrise, and fish along the pier. Later in the day, you can relax and enjoy an ice cream. Finally, listen to live music as the sun sets.

11. Drive 24 Miles to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse protects one of the most hazardous sections of the Atlantic Coast. Offshore of Cape Hatteras, the current forces southbound ships into a dangerous twelve-mile-long sandbar called Diamond Shoals. From the third Friday in April to Columbus Day in October, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open for self-guided climbs.

12. Drive 13 Miles to Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Cape Hatteras National Seashore has a rich heritage. Several historic events on the island include: the death of Blackbeard (the pirate), Civil War battles, famous lighthouses, hundreds of shipwrecks, Billy Mitchell’s test bombings, and Reginald Fessenden’s first radio broadcasts. Additionally, listen to the crash of ocean waves or the calm of the salt marshes.

13. Drive 23 Miles to Graveyard of Atlantic Museum

As beautiful as the Outer Banks are, they have proven harrowing to mariners. The Graveyard of Atlantic Museum both educates the public and preserves history, and is part of the North Carolina Maritime Museum System. The museum’s exhibits include early exploration of the Outer Banks, shipwrecks, and modern advancements to seafaring, offering an enriching experience for both the public and researchers.

14. Drive 24 Miles to Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry

Enjoy the next part of the scenic road trip aboard the most popular ferry managed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The ferry operates 365 days a year and this island-hop will last around 45 minutes. This free ferry links Ocracoke Island to the rest of the Outer Banks. Everyone is welcome whether you are traveling by foot, bike, or vehicle.

15. Drive 1 Mile to Ocracoke Lighthouse

In 1585, English explorers wrecked their ship on Ocracoke Inlet. Two hundred years later, Ocracoke Inlet was one of the busiest inlets on the East Coast and it was determined that the area would benefit from a lighthouse. In 1794, construction of the lighthouse began on Shell Castle Island and was finished within four years. Ocracoke Lighthouse helped mariners navigate the deepest inlet channel between shallow Pamlico Sound and the ocean for 20 years. By 1818, the main channel had shifted making the Ocracoke Lighthouse obsolete.

16. Drive 28 Miles to Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1964, the Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge is located near the southern end of Pamlico Sound and five miles west of the Atlantic. The 11,000 acres refuge contains both brackish marshes, pocosin (a wetland bog), and a woodland habitat. The refuge provides wintering grounds for ducks and colonial waterbirds, along with various vegetation.

17. Drive 30 Miles to Cape Lookout National Seashore

The final stop on the road trip is Cape Lookout National Park. It is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The park can be reached by both car and ferry. Visitors can hike scenic trails, go fishing or bird watching. Relax and enjoy the beauty of the Outer Banks.
