Downloaded the book this morning.

message 3: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I couldn't find it on Hoopla or at my library so I am going to pick it up tomorrow after work.

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
No hurry!

message 5: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I know. But I’m excited to read it

message 6: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Me too!

message 7: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I got the book!

message 8: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Awesome!

message 9: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I just got to chapter 6.

message 10: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Ok, I’ll start.

message 11: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments You don't have to! I am reading slow and reading other things as well. I was just letting you know I started.

message 12: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
I’m enjoying it already. I love her writing style.

message 13: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I do too. Normally I don't like a lot of flowery writing or over-detailed, but she does it so well in my opinion.

message 14: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
I have a feeling I am not going to be able to put this down, just finished chapter 6.

message 15: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments LOL I get it. I am feeling pressure to get my other reads in, but I am making this a priority.

message 16: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Me too. I'm supposed to be reading a dense 680 page book, and I am only halfway through.

message 17: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments And I feel like this month is flying by.

Leane wrote: "And I feel like this month is flying by."

Definitely. I cannot believe that tomorrow is the 15th.

Although I miss Alex Stern, I am really glad to be reading this book.

message 19: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments Yes. This is something completely different.

message 20: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Do we want to pick a chapter to finish, then discuss, before reading more?

message 21: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments We can do that. You pick the stopping point.

message 22: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Chapter 20. We will be 1/3 of the way through.

message 23: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments Perfect. I’m finishing my one buddy read today and then I can get back to our book.

message 24: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
No hurry, I am reading 4 other books.

message 25: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I appreciate your patience.

message 26: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
I finished chapter 20.

I counted how many books I am actually reading: 8, it was 9, but I finished one this morning.

message 27: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments WOW. That’s a lot!
I finished 1 last night and another this morning.
I’m going to jump into our book tonight.

message 28: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments Oh, I just finished chapter 20. That was a good stopping point.

message 29: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
I really like that she chose the Spanish Inquisition as her background.

message 30: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments Me too because I didn't really know anything about it and I've started looking into it a bit. And then of course, like all new things, it's been brought up in my life a couple times since.

I really love the banter and interaction between Santangel and Luzia, especially in chapter 12.

message 31: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Isn’t that the truth? I like how Bardugo introduced the magic here with Santangel. I am looking forward to how this working together will pan out. Does Luzia need Santangel to work magic?

message 32: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments Ohhh, that is a good question.
I was actually thinking HE needed HER. Like, he needs her as a conductor.

message 33: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Good thought!

message 34: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments Do you think the aunt is genuine with Luzia or there is some ulterior motive? Do you think Santangel knows her secrets?

message 35: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Oooh, good questions. I don't know to both. I am hoping that Luzia's aunt is just being cautious, rather than something else. Santangel is an interesting character. I am hoping that he is a little bit on Luzia's side, and won't betray her if he does know where Luzia and her aunt stand with their conversion.

message 36: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I hope he's on their side too!
I think he relates to them more (especially Luzia) in the way that he understands being a servant or slave. I think he's enjoyed the spunk in Luzia.

I think things are about to get interesting as we get into the competition and meet the real horrible players.

message 37: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
I totally agree. Even though I think he has his own motivation. I hope they will end up having a great relationship.

This next section will be interesting.

message 38: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I agree. He's definitely plotting his own thing. I'm excited to see where it goes.

What is our next stopping point? (I'm at work and I don't have the book with me.)

message 39: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
I'm looking...

message 40: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
I will arbitrarily say chapter 30. Once we get there, we may want to go farther. We would be at the halfway point. How's that sound?

message 41: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments That’s good with me!

message 42: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
I finished chapter 30.

message 43: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I'm on chapter 22, but I'm home for Passover for the next few days so I'll catchup.

message 44: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
No hurry at all.

message 45: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
Hi Leane,

I don't know if saw that I had updated my read count on the Familiar. I had meant to update a different book. Sorry for the confusion.

message 46: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments No no. Its ok. I’m sorry I’m taking so long!

message 47: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
No problem Leane at all (I am still read 6 other books),

message 48: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments I’m going to get back into it this weekend.

message 49: by Leane (new)

Leane | 45 comments Hi Karen,

I just finished Chapter 29, so I will get through 30 today and be caught up.

message 50: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 228 comments Mod
