Set in Russia during the icy winter, this book is based on Russian fairy tales and folklore. It is the second book in the Winternight Trilogy, picking up where the first book left off. Protagonist Vasilisa (Vasya) is being sought as a witch. She is trying to avoid marriage or a convent, so she dresses as a boy and leaves her village behind, seeking freedom and adventure. Vasya’s adventures lead her to Moscow and a reunion with her siblings. She is among the few that can see Morozko, the legendary frost demon and winter king. She rides a magical horse called Solovey.
I loved the first half of this book. It is beautifully written, and Vasya is a memorable character. She is spirited and headstrong, and often makes rash decisions. I particularly enjoyed the setting in Medieval Russia. Retellings can be hit or miss, but in this case, I am unfamiliar with the original material, and I found myself captivated by the story. It is a pleasing blend of history and fantasy. Toward the end, it gets dark and frenzied. If you enjoyed The Bear and the Nightingale, you will very likely enjoy this one.
