No, I think he is a messed up guy who is superstitious, as the nun told Lucas (more or less). He is curious about the process of death at the last minute and whether the dying person sees anything out there. Perhaps he had a religious upbringing and is uncomfortable with his lack of belief in a life after death. but who knows, with him into all those drugs?
