Jen K | 3198 comments Bingtown is a trader town mostly ruled by the founding families who have gained wealth through their liveships, vessels made from wizardwood who after three generations turn into sentient beings connected to those with the blood of their families. The newest liveship that awakens is Vivacia to the Vestrit family. Unfortunately the tragedy that leads to her awakening also leaves the family with instability. The story is told mostly through the Vestrit family especially Althea and her newphew Wintrow but also the pirate Kennit who is looking to become a legend by capturing a liveship.

The world building and characters are all so complex and well written. I was completely engaged in the story. There are so many little threads and stories unfolding. Although over 800 pages, it read quickly and I was anxious to know more of the fates of the Vestrit family and Vivacia. There are hints at secrets and an abandoned liveship with a dangerous path. There are politics and cultural changes as slavery and the idea of women as docile homemakers only seeping into Bingtown while the founders hold onto not quite known relationship with those up the river. I look forward to reading the next in the trilogy soon.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12838 comments I have nothing but praise for this series, in fact the entire Eldering story is a masterwork!

Jen K | 3198 comments I'm so excited to get to the next one. I need to remember and not make to many other commitments so I can read by the end of the month.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12838 comments There is a piece of me that wants to re-read them with you. In the Fantasy group we read the entire Eldering story, over 3 years, and just completed it last year. As soon as we closed the last book we wanted to start all over again! If only I had the time....

So many book and so little time. It is a shame.
