I was uncomfortable with Gwen leaving her children behind, but I don't know what else she could have done. Waiting for Mel to find her and the kids was not her way.
If Gwen sits tight in Stillwater, she is a sitting duck. Mel would have no problem finding her and the children. With the kids safe with Javier, she can move around and at least make it harder for Mel to get to her.
I think it was the best thing she could do in a bad situation. If she sends the kids to her mother's house, Mel will figure out where they are and take them. If she sits around waiting for Mel to show up in Tennessee, she's giving him the upper hand. Leaving the kids with people who could be trusted and going after Mel herself was the best option.
