This book tells the true story of D.C. Stephenson, a charismatic psychopath who played a primary role in the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana in the 1920s. He built an organization by spreading fear of the other, particularly blacks, Catholics, Jews, and immigrants. He profited from memberships and merchandise and lived lavishly in a huge mansion. The Klan held sway over local police and politicians, many of whom were members. As Grand Dragon, Stephenson thought he was above the law and said so. The Klan hid behind religion, leading morality and temperance campaigns. Based on the leaders’ lifestyles, the hypocrisy is incredible. The storyline follows the Stephenson’s downfall, brought about by a woman whom he abused. This book highlights another lesson we can learn from history. It points out the willingness of a mass of people to rally behind a narcissist who sows seeds of racial hatred and engages in fearmongering. This behavior has occurred throughout history, and is, sadly, still relevant today.
