Have you read any debut novels (meaning, an author's one and only book published so far)? Which ones? Will you likely be reading more if the author has books published in the future?

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 301 comments I didn't think I read a lot of novels (debut or not) this year, but turns out there were quite a few.

Aina Hunter, Charlotte and the Chickenman. Flawed but interesting: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Justin Torres, Blackouts. Some nice writing vaguely reminiscent of Sebald and Puig, though it could be tighter.

I'll leave out the ones that I can't recommend, except for Kelly Link's The Book of Love, a disappointment.

Rachel | 23 comments This year I've read debut novels from:
Clyo Mendoza Fury: A Novel)
Kaveh Akbar (Martyr!)
Elizabeth O'Connor (Whale Fall)
Lottie Hazell (Piglet)

I'd read from all of them again but Mendoza is probably the only one I would actively seek out.

Ness (ness_mar) Chrysalis by Anna Metcalfe - Really enjoyed this.
Baba by Mohamed Maalel (Italian original) - Nice autofiction book, but it needed a more polished writing.

Ruben | 80 comments I've read quite a few this year already, including the very clever América del Norte and The Ministry of Time...

...but the one I keep telling people about is Bad Habit - although with a 4.54 rating it probably doesn't need my endorsement :)

Ben | 1 comments I think I've read 5 debut novels (though I am no doubt forgetting some). It's been quite successful. In four cases I would definitely read the next novel the author writes:

Wild Houses by Colin Barrett
Headshot by Rita Bullwinkel
Pity by Andrew MacMillan
Chrysalis by Anna Metcalfe.

The other debut was The Ministry of Time which was a limp disappointment.
