For me, given an audiobook with a competent professional narrator, I will almost always prefer the audiobook over a Hollywood movie. Here are some examples, off the top of my head:Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke
The Razor’s Edge by W. Somerset Maugham (I'm comparing the novel to the 1984 film, not the 1946 film, which I haven't seen)
The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe
11/22/63 by Stephen King
On the Beach by Nevil Shute
True Grit, by Charles Portis. The language is so delightful, and the narration by Donna Tartt so excellent, that this is far better than the John Wayne movie version and even better than the Coen brothers'. A film adaptation can do the novel justice, but it can't outdo it.
Roadside Picnic by Sturgatsky Bros. (The movie isn’t bad it just has a radically different feel than the audiobook)
