Reading Emerson is challenging but rewarding.

I find the dense 19th century prose to be dense yet often beautiful, philosophical then interspersed with arrestingly personal imagery.

I remember reading the first chapter decades ago in a High School English class and thinking that transcendentalism sounded cool, but was not quite sure what it meant exactly. Now after all these years and a closer reading, the concepts are just as alluring and illusive.

I look forward to discussing this, as I believe it's the kind of essay (or treatise?) that will benefit from the combined effort of dedicated readers.Ralph Waldo Emerson
