This is possibly the first book that I’ve read set in Fiji. A historical police procedural following Akal Singh who is sent to Fuji after making a professional mistake having had a successfully career previously in India and Hong Kong. Whilst Akal investigates the disappearance of an indentured Indian woman in Fiji, he has to confront the reality of the racism of the British colonisers in Fiji as well as the existence of the indentured workers. This historical novel was interesting, but there were times when I felt my focus and attention was wandering. I liked both the setting and the premise, but found that the characters and the mystery didn’t fully engage me.
