Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Hi please can we have a nomination for June in the following format.
Nom 1 military fantasy
Nom 2 humorous fun fantasy
Second 1
Second 2.

This is to make it easier for me due to 2 themes this month.

Please try to link posts, no young adult as last month was a one off and only one second per theme.

First 6 books in each category properly seconded will go into the poll.

Thanks

My Military nomination is Fortress Draconis by Michael Stackpole

message 5: by Michele (new)

Michele I'll nominate Gemini Cell by Myke Cole for military

Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was by Barry Hughart for humorous.

I'll second Lamb.

message 6: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Hi not sure if Gemini cell is really fantasy Michele.

message 7: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Also nkt sure about Lamb either.

message 8: by Bev (last edited Apr 15, 2015 11:23AM) (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments So far humour has
Colour of magic
Lamb....
To say nothing of the dog
Mort
Bridge of birds

military has
Fortress Draconis
Gemini cell
Scourge of the betrayer

message 9: by Michele (last edited Apr 10, 2015 08:21AM) (new)

Michele Yes it is - Myke Cole is strictly modern day fantasy mixed with modern day Armed Forces - magic all over the place. It's urban fantasy with soldiers instead of detectives.

Shadowdenizen | 193 comments 1) Military Fantasy- The Way Into Chaos (First in a trilogy.)
2) Humorous Fantasy: I'm torn between two books, so I'd like to see which (if any) gets a nod, if that's possble. Either The School for Good and Evil, or Half Upon a Time

I checked through the archives, don't see that any of the trio has been picked before, unless I missed it.

message 12: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Hi both your humour choices are childrens/young adult sorry not admissable.

message 13: by Shadowdenizen (last edited Apr 10, 2015 08:57AM) (new)

Shadowdenizen | 193 comments OK, we'll discount those, though it's somewhat disappointing! :)

How about we replace it with "The Legend of Jig Dragonslayer? (That's actually the omnibus edition; first book is Goblin Quest.)

message 14: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments OK, I'll second Gemini Cell.

And I'll nominate The Shadow of Ararat for military fantasy.

Goblin quest is fine.

I'll Second Scourge of the Betrayer

Tracey the Lizard Queen Bev wrote: "Also nkt sure about Lamb either."

Regarding Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal this is how it is described on the author's site: 'Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes.' I would consider this humorous fantasy.

You may however there are many people on here who could find it offensive from a religious perspective. I am pretty sure that it will cause trouble and will probably only be read due to this conversation however if you say it fits the bill I will add it.

I'm sure people will read the description and decide whether they think it's a good choice or not. If they are offended by it they simply don't have to vote for it.

message 21: by Dylan (new)

Dylan Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson is good if it hasn't been done yet

message 22: by Dylan (new)

Dylan Oops sorry I clicked the wrong month I had previously read different guidelines and came back to comment

message 23: by Margret (new)

Margret Second To Say Nothing of the Dog.

Nominate Mort (terry pratchett) for humorous.

I hope that's an OK nom... I'm a discworld virgin and I think it's the first of the "death" sub series?

Have no idea what to nom for military so I'll leave that to someone else.

message 24: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I second Mort. I don't know what to vote for military either. Don't really have any in the subgenre floating around.

message 25: by Dave (new)

Dave The Black Company could be considered military fantasy.

second for mort.

message 26: by Evan (last edited Apr 15, 2015 02:18AM) (new)

Evan Not sure what all falls under military fantasy, so here is some guesses that I enjoyed.

Blood Song by Anthony Ryan

The Red Knight by Miles Cameron
or
The Red Knight by K.T. Davies

I feel like there are a ton of series that don't really have armies or military units going at it until later into the series. It seems to be a main point of progression for many trilogies.

message 27: by Michele (new)

Michele To Say Nothing of the Dog is one of my favorite books - but it's SF/time travel, not fantasy.

message 28: by Alissa (last edited Apr 15, 2015 05:33AM) (new)

Alissa | 220 comments Looking forward to both the themed reads!

For military fantasy Hawkwood's Voyage by Paul Kearney
For humorous fun fantasy The High Crusade by Poul Anderson (I see it is shelved as fantasy/sci-fi, I hope it qualifies).

I second The Red Knight and Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was.

From the descriptions I have read, It seems thatTo Say Nothing of the Dog crosses several genres. I have not read the book but it seems to have elements of Historical Fantasy, Science Fiction Fantasy, Steam Punk, and just plain Humorous Fantasy. I think we should be allowed to vote on it.

It is part scifi but also fantasy and historical.

message 32: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Guys please check that we have not read the book before nominatkng and seconding.

message 33: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 220 comments You're totally right, but in my defense, kind of difficult with a smartphone. I second The Red Knight by K.T. Davies instead of the same by Miles Cameron.

message 34: by Bruce (new)

Bruce Nordstrom I'd like to second, "Black Company" for military. I read it a few years ago, and loved the really unorthodox style.

As a fairly new member, it took me a bit to figure out to check the bookshelf for every book I was interested in reading. Unfortunately, a lot of the books I was interested in had been already read. One such book was Chronicles of the Black Company. I only point this out because I really wanted to nominate it. Sorry to all that wanted this one.

Evan Can anyone link the list of books already read?

You can find them in the group bookshelf, https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...

message 38: by Evan (new)

Evan Thanks! Spent 20 minutes looking for a thread. Didn't even think to look to see a bookshelf.

Thanks Alissa. I should have put the link. (Duh).

message 40: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) I'd like to nominate Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan for military fantasy. It is the first in the Powder Mage trilogy, and (yay) all three books are published if anyone decides to go ahead after and finish them. :)

message 41: by Bruce (new)

Bruce Nordstrom Just read the final choices of June 2015, and decided not to take part this month. I've got a lot of other reading I'm already hoping to do. And neither selection appeals to me. I don't care much for serial novels, and neither of these sounds like something I want to get into at this time.

TS Chan (tschan) I second Promise of Blood
