Stardust is a fairy tale that takes the form of a quest. Seventeen-year-old protagonist Tristan wants to impress a beautiful girl on whom he has a crush. She flippantly asks him to bring her the fallen star they viewed together. Taking her seriously, he crosses the Wall that separates the real and magical worlds, and travels through the land of the Fae to find the star. In the Fae world, fallen stars are young women. The storyline follows the ups and downs of his quest. It weaves in stories of brothers vying for a throne, and a romantic love triangle. It takes a rather lengthy detour through Tristan’s family heritage at the beginning. Despite the teenage protagonists, it seems more geared toward adults, since it contains graphic sex and gruesome deaths of both people and animals. I enjoyed parts but it is a little too dark for my taste.
