This was a book that kind of surprised me, not expecting to read a romantic comedy by Virginia Woolf. This book was published in 1919 so was probably written during WWI and published shortly after the war. It is a character study of two women with themes of love, freedom and quest for identify. In that it does explore themes of women and feminism. One of the women is active in the suffrage movement. The book examines marriage and the women's journey to independence and quest for identity. In addition it looks at love and relationship, social class and mobility, tradion and modernity. At over 500 pages it is one of her longer works but it wasn't hard to read. Though set in Edwardian era, young people still search for self realization, romance, love, and independence.
