message 6: by CJ (last edited Oct 03, 2024 08:59AM) (new)

CJ | 61 comments I finished Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White last night. It was announced last month that Lilly Wachowski will produce a movie adaptation of it, which is pretty awesome.

I haven't written a review for it yet, but as a trans person, I can tell you, it's a very, very trans story. Like, it's full throttle rage at cisnormativity and the hell people invested in cisnormativity create for us trans people and others. I don't want to give any spoilers but it's a novel written by a righteously angry trans person and it has things to say to the cis world that the cis world isn't really able to hear right now, so no surprise Wachowski, whose own movie The Matrix, another very trans work, was misinterpreted for so long, took an interest in it.

EDIT 10/03/2024: my review of Hell Followed With Us

message 10: by CJ (last edited Oct 05, 2024 06:28PM) (new)

CJ | 61 comments Read Graveyard Shift by ML Rio last night. It's pretty meh. Also finished Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist, and it's problematic and not just a little. I had no idea it was this problematic from how wildly popular it is but now that I know, I wonder if that's part of its popularity. My main issue is with its treatment of pedophilia and children's bodies, but relatedly, I also felt the book is kind of transphobic, with being voyeuristic towards trans kids' bodies, but it's hard to say any more about that without spoilers so I'll leave it at that. Just take that as a major content warning for that novel.

Checked out the graphic novel Homebody by Theo Parish from the library today. So far it looks great.

Also right now am reading the novella The Word for World in Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin and am loving it.

CJ | 61 comments y wrote: "Ace! Hope to finish it by the end of the month."

Excellent! I haven't read the whole book yet. I have to be particularly motivated to read a non-fiction book front to back, but as a fellow ace, I like Angela Chen a lot, she is a very good communicator and I'm happy she's part of our aspec community.

message 19: by CJ (new)

CJ | 61 comments I read Flamboyants: The Queer Harlem Renaissance I Wish I'd Known About by George M. Johnson, who also wrote All Boys Aren't Blue, yesterday and loved it. It's very short, but very good.

message 20: by Sai :) (new)

Sai :) (the climate catastrophe is real) I've been meaning to read All Boys Aren't Blue, will def check out Flamboyants too. I'm currently reading One Dark Window, which is so far a 5-star fantasy read. I don't think it has any queer rep, probably not but I'm on page 50 out of three hundred something so who knows. But its still really good so far

message 21: by alex (new)

alex gonzalez navarro (gay_bassi_blues) | 8 comments Currently I'm reading The Tragedy of Felix and Jake! I hear it doesn't have a ton or excess amount of shut (good for me) and it hits close to home because it's mainly about two former drug addicts who fall in love. Kinda excited because most reviews were positive and it seems like a "ruin you and make you wish you'd gone blind so you'd never had to read this" kinda book which makes me stoked

I agree! Chen is truly a good communicator. The chapters are divided into short sections, each with a smooth combination of anecdotes and arguments, and the language goes straight to the point—all making the book easy to read for an easily distracted reader like me.
