Have you read Ted Chiang? He sounds possibly similar.
Also, I notice that you have The Flaneur: A Stroll through the Paradoxes of Paris listed in your to-read bookshelf. It's on mine as well. I am thinking of reading it in the next year along with The Arcades Project by Walter Benjamin. Though the second is a bit of a commitment, so not in the next 6 months. If you'd by interested in a buddy read of those sometime, let me know.

To me, her writing is not at the level of some of the great ones that this Hotel holds dear, However, I enjoyed her book and I recommend it.
I am also excited at the prospect of more magical realist authors being published and I was surprised her fans seem to be completely unaware of the latin-american Boom literature movement.
