I just finished a really good one that was partly set in Afghanistan.
In the Likely Event

It is a romance (which I don't read a lot of), but was not cringey for me. It had some very exciting action elements to it as well because part of the story took place in Afghanistan with one of the MCs being in the military.

I hadn't read the author before, but I will definitely check out her other books.
