I left in these former countries because in books they might be the setting rather than modern countries. If we go back earlier in history there are many more, and if you read a book set in a country with a name starting with A, B, C or D, that is not on this list, tell us in the comments.

In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros In the Likely Event

It is a romance (which I don't read a lot of), but was not cringey for me. It had some very exciting action elements to it as well because part of the story took place in Afghanistan with one of the MCs being in the military.

I hadn't read the author before, but I will definitely check out her other books.
