3CS Book Club CDA discussion

Greetings Fellow Book Club Readers, How are you finding our November read, Travels With Charley? I have dog eared quite a few pages throughout the book. Steinbeck's writing of his interactions with various folks has kept me in stitches. His writing is poetic. He makes you feel as though you were right there, the aroma of coffee brewing, conversation flowing.

Any insights, comments, favorite passages?

I'll end with this from page 50 where he meets French Canadian Clan. When they all gathered in his camper, Rocinante and he writes "....there came into Rocinante a triumphant human magic that can bless a house, or a truck for that matter -nine people gathered in complete silence and the nine parts making a whole as surely as my arms and legs are part of me, separate and inseparable. Rocinante took. on a glow it never quite lost." .... "They walked in silence among sleepy stumbling children and I never saw them again. But I like them."

Kim, I agree. This is a significant passage. So much wisdom could be gathered from the little episode. I especially liked the odd assortment of cups, glasses, and jars, creatively utilized so all might enjoy the prized beverage!

Hello Bookclubbers! Have you enjoyed Travels With Charley? Have any of you embarked on a leisurely road trip across the United States? I enjoyed Steinbecks observations of the characteristics of people in different regions of the US. I could also relate to his enthusiasm at the beginning of his journey and how toward the end he seemed to become a little jaded. Why do you think that occurred? Do you think he was lonely? Road weary? Homesick? whatever it may be I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I loved the writing, how he wrote about how things made him feel. That perhaps was what enjoyed most is that he conveyed his personal thoughts and feelings about what he experienced.
