30.5 - Cat's Task: Books of South America

We will be reading books associated with the continent South America, and using the information on this link for reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

Note: we will only be considering the sovereign states, and NOT the dependent territories.

Pick an option.
Required: state the option.

Option 1: Two Book Option (no page count requirement)

Book 1: Read a book that is set (at least 70%) in one or more countries in South America, or is about one or more countries in South America (if Non-Fiction).

Required: state the country(/ies), and provide supporting evidence if it's not obvious from the GR metadata or blurb.

Book 2: Read a book that is written by an author born in a country in South America. Multiple authors are allowed, provided that ALL are born within South America. The author(s) need not be from the country used for book 1.
Required: provide a link to prove place of birth if it's not obvious from the GR metadata.

Option 2: One Book Option
Read one book of at least 500 pages that fits both criteria of Option 1.

Susan A | 1759 comments Lost in the Jungle

From the book description, it starts in Bolivia and then "they get lost in the Amazonian jungle" From the author's GR page - Ghinsberg is most known for his survival story of when he was stranded in an uncharted part of the Bolivian Amazon jungle for three weeks in 1981

Assuming it meets the 70% mark - is this enough information to qualify?

Assuming it meets the 70% being in Bolivia and/or the Amazonian jungle in general (i.e. who even knows if they end up in Brazil!) it'll work :)

Kathy KS | 2440 comments OK, I guess I'm looking at your intent, here. I have a book written by an author born on Trinidad. Trinidad and Tobago, according to what I find, is an independent nation.
Sacrifices For Kingdoms by Patricia D'Arcy Laughlin

However, Wikipedia has mixed signals... the link you gave (...Sovereign States... in South America) does NOT include it.

The Wikipedia article on the country says "Caribbean".

But the article on Trinidad says:
"Trinidad is the larger and more populous of the two major islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The island lies 11 km (6.8 mi) off the northeastern coast of Venezuela and sits on the continental shelf of South America."

So, I just thought I'd get that clarified right off.

Kathy KS | 2440 comments Could someone clarify for me, from message 6, please?

Cat (cat_uk) | 3458 comments Sorry, didn't get a notification earlier.

We are using the list linked in the task. If the country is on that list it works. If it's not, regardless of any other info you dig up, it doesn't

Thanks.

Susan A | 1759 comments I read Miracle in the Andes for Book 2. But now I notice that the cover says

Nando Parrado with Vince Rause.

Does "with" mean that Vince Rause is an author of the book?

Uggh...I think it does. His name is in such tiny print, I never even looked at the GR page until I went to post the completion.

Susan A | 1759 comments Assuming Miracle in the Andes does not work...does this author

Andrés Ruzo work?

From here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3...

A tri-citizen, Ruzo grew up between Peru, Nicaragua, and the United States,

But it doesn't say specifically where he was born.

With a simple Google search I found:
https://2023.hispanicstar.org/book_au....
"Andres Ruzo is the Co-founder and CEO of LinkAmerica, a leading telecommunication, technology services company in the United States. He was born in Lima, Peru in 1961 and moved to the United States in 1980 to pursue a degree in Engineering at Texas A&M University. "

Yes, Rause is listed as an author in GR. Unless he was also born in South America that book won't work

The evidence Kathy found is good for the second author option.

Thanks for trying to help. I did a search as well before asking my question and found that information. That is not the author Andres Ruzo. It’s a person with the same name.

Cat (cat_uk) | 3458 comments Without clear info on where he was born I can't, in light of the task rules, approve, . sorry.
