One of the most fascinating aspects of monster creation (At least for me) is the study of the folklore of various countries around the world. Everyone I assume has heard of vampires and the like. But how many have heard of things like the Nelapsi or Upierczi?

That's why I love the Witcher books, because of the many references to Slavic folklore. A somewhat strange creature from German of more specifically Bavarian folklore would be the Wolpertinger, which is essentially a tiny chimera that often is depicted as a bunny or a squirrel with wings, antlers, sharp teeth or duck feet. You can see different depictions if you visit a traditional Bavarian restaurant for example. Essentially, 19th century taxidermists startet mixing parts of different animals together to scam superstitious tourists. In horror fiction, I love it when creatures with different folkloristic roots appear, as they tend to be particularly weird and it often inspires me to dig deeper into the specific mythology and culture.
There's a Brazilian TV series on Netflix that uses Brazilian folklore in its plot. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8878862/... and, curiously, there's an Australian TV show that used a creature from Brazilian folklore https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0215392/.... Emilie de Ravin (Claire from Lost) plays it. I actually knew her first from this show before see her in Lost.
