I like introspective books too, Joy. I read this one a while ago, but remember disliking it and giving it 2 stars (which I rarely do).

As this story opens, Marie is a young girl sitting on the stoop of her parents’ Brooklyn walk-up in what appears to be the 1920s, waiting for her father to come home from work. As the title indicates, she is an ordinary person living an ordinary life but still desiring to be “someone.” The narrative tells her life story in glimpses of points in time, moving backward and forward. We follow Marie’s experiences of life’s milestones, tragedies, happy times, and disappointments from girlhood into old age. For a time, she works at a funeral home. It covers well-trodden ground that paints a picture of Irish Catholic Brooklyn through the major events of the 20th century. It is a nicely written, quiet, and reflective novel. While I tend to enjoy introspective books, it might be a little too low key, even for me.
