This is one of these moments when I regret that so little of Polish fantasy is translated into English. Throughout 2003-2005 Wit Szostak published a nice trilogy set in the world inspired by mountainous region of Podhale, soaked in Górals/Highlanders' legends and fairy tales. If you wonder, their culture is very, very distinctive.Tolkien's "Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" take place in the mountains, don't they? It'd be a great opportunity to reread the former :). Strangely enough, I've never read it in the original language before.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again would work very well, because the tale is situated on the journey to Lonely Mountain and back. LOTR has a lot more environments, although there are plenty of mountains!
Okay, some mountain recs! These are all books I gave at least 4 stars to. I'm sure I'm missing some that I read and enjoyed.
-The Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett take place in the mountains. The first book is The Wee Free Men.
-The Mere Wife by Maria Dahvana Headley, could also work for subterranean bc a character lives in a mountain cave for a time.
-Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, set in the Pachuca Range.
-When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo, the second book in a fantasy novella series.
-The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott, set in the mountains where a magical bird lives.
-The Memory Theater by Karin Tidbeck, one of the characters is the daughter of a mountain.
-Song of Silver, Flame Like Night by Amélie Wen Zhao, first book in a YA fantasy series
-Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett, the second book in the series, takes place in the Alps.

Here are some great recommendations of books that take place in the mountains:
Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands it is part 2 of a series so you’d have to read Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries first
The Cats of Tanglewood Forest
Seven Wild Sisters? (It’s been a while but I think it takes place in the mountains)
The Hum and the Shiver

Seven Wild Sisters takes place in the same location as Cats! They would count as forest, too.

I read The Shuddering by Ania Ahlborn and give it 4 stars. Takes place in the mountains of Colorado.A solid winter creature feature that features likeable characters and knows just the right amount of info to give for our villains. TW for animal death.
There are some scenes that take place in the mountains in Witch of Wild Things
I wasn’t originally reading this book for this prompt but now I’m counting it

I am still so stumped on this one! It's the only category I don't have a book decided/"on deck" for yet. There is a mountain of significance that comes into play near the end of Megan Barnard's Jezebel but I'm unsure if it truly suits...I need to think about it.
I've seen quite a few books set in the Appalachians recently. I wonder if its trending? Maybe I will read one of those for this one. Having lived in the Appalachians for a few years, it might be extra interesting to read about.

Please let us know which ones you read! I’m still looking for prompts
The two books I read, Witch of Wild Things and The Bewitchingonly have a few pages that actually take place in the mountains, so I kind of feel like I’m cheating even though they are great books, in particular the Bewitching

Hm I was just thinking if The Lost Story by Meg Shaffer could count under mountains. It's inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia and partially takes place in the woods of Appalachian West Virginia where two boys mysteriously go missing. I read it earlier this year and quite enjoyed it!
I took out Witch of Wild Things because there was really only one page with a mountain and replaced it with Black Woods Blue Sky. There are lots and lots of scenes with mountains in the later book!
