The Unlucky Ones
worked really well for me until the last 10%. My 3.5 star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm kicking off the new year with
Gilt Trip by Diane Vallere https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I don't think it's possible to overstate the importance and power of Between the World and Me, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates as a letter to his then teenaged son. Who decided what "race" is ... and why?
My review of Between the World and Me with many quotations
I’m rereading “Fairy Tale” by Sir King. Not exactly his style, but I’m enjoying a narrative for once!
I love the DC Smith series and The Late Lord Thorpe
did not disappoint. My five star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Close to Death
by Anthony HorowitzHawthorne & Horowitz #5. This has been a great series for me. This book shows an extremely clever and complicated plot and very interesting characters/suspects. However the construction of the book is very different from its predecessors. There is almost no direct interaction between Hawthorne and Horowitz. They almost never actually meet. Fascinating mystery but I didn't love it like the others in the series. 3 stars.
I wasn't a John Marrs fan before this one, but I'm now rethinking his work. Kind of a scary read, like in a forboding feeling.

I just re-read Case Histories

Hidden Crimes
4 stars
gripping 11th installment in the DCI Sophie Allen series, blending suspense, mystery, and complex characters.

I've finished two mystery novels: first, The Little Sparrow Murders by Seishi Yokomizo, another in his Kosuke Kindaichi series available from Pushkin Vertigo. I have to say that this is one of the better Kindaichi novels -- it's not nearly as convoluted as some of them have been and I would never have guessed the "who" in a million years. I had bought the film on dvd some time back in anticipation of reading this book and I am so glad I read the novel first.
The second was another Japanese crime novel, The Black Swan Mystery by Tetsuya Ayukawa, also from Pushkin Vertigo, another mystery where I didn't figure out the ending before the police did. This one was really good, and had a lot of pieces to it that kept me guessing.
I've already started A Case of Matricide by Graeme Macrae Burnet, whose books I buy when they are first released because I love his work and writing so very much.

Now starting WHITE FOX by Owen Matthews, the final novel in his mystery/thriller trilogy featuring KGB officer Alexander Vasin and set in a remote Soviet gulag just after the Kennedy assassination.
Ich habe gestern "Am Anfang schuf Gott Himmel und Hölle" beendet. Ein brutaler Thriller von Joachim Selbert. 5-Sterne-Bewertung, ich freu mich schon auf die Fortsetzung...
I've seen True Love by Paddy Crewe compared to Sally Rooney's writing, and I think that's appropriate. I preferred his unusual first book, My Name Is Yip. I like this, but less.
My review of True Love
Still Life by Sarah Winman
is my first five star book of the new year. My review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I finally started Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries last summer, which was long overdue. This is a gem of a series! In #2, Murderbot investigates its past.

Finished 2024 with a reread, The High Window by Raymond Chandler -- not his best, but still very readable.
Starting 2025 with a reread, Ghost Story by Peter Straub. Not very far along yet.

Hangman
by Faye KellermanIn this Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus mystery, Lt. Decker investigates murders and disappearances in Los Angeles.
These novels always have a healthy dose of the Deckers' home life, which is a nice touch. 3.5 stars
