Have fun!

Danielle H (sootyink) | 7 comments Thanks for the welcome! I'm going to try to get to this, but I'm currently in the middle of "The Royal We" and also I am THE WORST at finishing books (I don't think I finished a single book for adults in 2014, HOW ARE YOU FRIENDS WITH ME?!?) but I've heard good things about this and trying to have a life outside of just Tumblr and TV, so, OPTIMISM AT WORK!

Jess | 37 comments Mod
I BELIEVE IN YOU.

Sonja (sonni89) | 6 comments No spoilers yet because I know most people are still reading, but: I just finished Burn for Me and it was soooooooooooooooooooooo good.

Jess | 37 comments Mod
I WANT THEM TO BANG RIGHT NOW

Welcome to book discussion weekend! Your thoughts, feelings, etc. go here.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments POOR NEVADA. THE HOT, THOUGHTFUL GUY IS GOING TO INTENSELY PURSUE HER AND IT'LL BE AWESOME.

Jess | 37 comments Mod
THERE IS GOING TO BE INTENSE WOOING AND WON'T THAT BE AWFUL.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments She totally is going to complain about it. And get ABSOLUTELY NO SYMPATHY. From either readers or book characters!

Jess | 37 comments Mod
Her family is going to be Team Rogan and I can't wait.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments And in other things, (view spoiler)

Sucks to be her!

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments We shouldn't have picked this book, Jess. Now I am too sad with the thought of the many, many months we have until the next one!

message 15: by Tori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tori (torigates) | 3 comments I NEED THE SEDUCING TO COME WITH A SIDE OF WOOING

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments OH OH OH.

I want him to start with the seducing and only THEN have it occur to him that he should woo first!

message 17: by Tori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tori (torigates) | 3 comments Yesssss. Like she'll comment something like OF COURSE THE SEX WOULD BE GREAT BUT THEN WHAT? and he'd be like, "....we'd be in love?" and then realise he needs to do things RIGHT.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments AHAHAHAHA YES. Like it takes him a while to really get her legit concerns.

message 19: by Jess (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jess | 37 comments Mod
I AM INTO THIS IDEA.

message 20: by Tori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tori (torigates) | 3 comments It would be hilarious if he realised this just as she decided she was okay with having a purely physical relationship, and then he was like, yeah, we're not going to have sex afterall. NOT UNTIL I WIN YOUR HEART.

message 21: by Jess (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jess | 37 comments Mod
Nevada, the seducer. Rogan, the woo-er.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments YES. She tries to talk him into bed and he's all NOPE.

Andree | 10 comments I could maybe get behind that? In later books. IDK. I really need her legit concerns to be dealt with first. I liked the chemistry, but there was too much other stuff that was problematic for me.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments Yeah!! I think the thing that makes it work so well for me is how aware Nevada really is of all the problems with having a relationship--or even just sex--with Rogan.

And I think what I'm really rooting for is Rogan to understand all those concerns. I don't think he does right now.

Sonja (sonni89) | 6 comments I NEED A LOT OF WOOING IN BOOK TWO. And yes, obviously, on a more serious note, for Rogan to understand the concerns Nevada has. But, WOOING.

message 26: by Jess (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jess | 37 comments Mod
In fairness to the mass murderer, I don't think he understands all of the concerns because to him they're not. Especially the power imbalance thing, because he's more aware than she is of just how much power Nevada has. So to him, it's simply a non-issue, even though to her it's a monumental one.

The carelessness with other people though, I do want him to fully understand her issue with that.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments Hahaha, you're so right, Jess! Now I want him to casually slip it into conversation.

"Rogan, the power imbalance is just too great."
"Well, actually . .. ."

message 28: by Andree (last edited Apr 26, 2015 09:55AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Andree | 10 comments Oh, I really like Nevada. I think she's pretty great, and her awareness of the issues helps.

The biggest part of the power difference issue for me is actually not the magical abilities thing (because I agree, I think it's clear that Rogan is more aware than Nevada of how much power she has). The bigger issue to me is sort of the social aspect of that? That he, because he is Mad Rogan, can pretty much have whatever he wants, whenever he wants, but other people don't live like that. It's the fact that he just expects to be able to do essentially whatever is most convenient, and most logical to him. And he's strong enough to get it, so why shouldn't he?

message 29: by Jess (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jess | 37 comments Mod
Oh yes, true, the social standing thing is definitely a real issue that I'm certain he doesn't understand. The example of him no strangling the girl in the dress, for instance. He legit doesn't see why he can't do that because he wouldn't see consequences.

It's a problem that I look forward to her schooling him on.

Andree | 10 comments Him kidnapping her, him thinking it's okay to threaten her mother... The list goes on and on.

And the strangling the girl in the dress thing, he just decides that since he thinks she's a terrible person who will never contribute anything, well, then I'll just strangle her a bit to get information. Seriously, unless there's a major shift, he's not a guy I'd ever want to see anyone in a relationship with. I'd be too afraid of what would happen the second they (or someone they cared about) did something that didn't fit in his worldview.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments Yeah!

Actually, I really like how the book plays with that social difference in general, like Nevada's comments to Adam about her expensive suit. That's not something he or Rogan has to think about at all, but she does.

Andree | 10 comments I like how the book acknowledges the social difference a lot too! I just wanted it to do more than acknowledge it. I get that it's a trilogy and all the character growth isn't going to happen in book 1, but I think I needed more character growth than there was? Because between the three male primes introduced in this book, all I could think anytime Rogan showed up, was dude you really are the lesser of three evils. And I need a bit more than that in a romantic lead.

message 33: by Jazmin (last edited Apr 26, 2015 11:15AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jazmin | 2 comments I think the social standing to me at least is something that might be brought up. Like, Rogan is totally dedicated to this cause but the process is gonna be excellent because you know Nevada is gonna drag him over the coals for that. As well, the casual disregarding of human life is something that I feel will be gone in depth.

On that note, I am actually quite looking forward to that wooing. Super pumped but ugh four more months to wait :(

message 34: by Jess (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jess | 37 comments Mod
I'm actually super excited that this is a definite trilogy. I think specific series length allows for better plotting (LAUREN WILLIG, I AM LOOKING AT YOU), and in general, trilogies are good for the type of prolonged ship development that this one is going to be going for.

I am still sort of baffled by how into this I was from the beginning. I remember my intro to Kate Daniels and it was not this. At all.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments I think they've really grown as writers a lot.

I mean, forget Kate Daniels even, most first books of ANY series aren't that great for me.

AND SO MUCH YES to it being a definite trilogy! I usually need more than one book for a ship to really work for me, but that can so swiftly turn into dragging it out too long.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments Ha, sorry! I thought we'd complained about that!

Oh yessss, me too, being a cliche.

Really, we should all just be happy we're getting another book this year. When it was published last fall, this was not a guarantee.

CAN YOU IMAGINE????

Jazmin | 2 comments I probably would have lost it and screamed if I didn't know a sequel was happening. Did anyone have any ~surprise faces? Because mine was Lina the assistant. I loved her way more than I thought was possible to love a side character.

message 39: by Alix (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alix | 12 comments I know I'm late to the party BUT THIS WAS SO GOOD. SO SO GOOD.

Nevada is such a great heroine! She's reasonable and sensible and aware in a way that I find lacks so often.

OH AND ROGAN. Ok so he definitely needs to grow as a characters but I MEAN COME ON. He remembered the carnations!!! They are already so hot together, it's going to be amazing.

Like Katie said: POOR NEVADA. THE HOT, THOUGHTFUL GUY IS GOING TO INTENSELY PURSUE HER AND IT'LL BE AWESOME. -> I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS.

The only negative thing I have to say about this book IS WHY DO WE HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE FALL FOR THE NEXT ONE.

Oh and question: (view spoiler)

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments PEOPLE WHO GIVE IT FIVE STARS CAN BE AS LATE AS THEY WANT. (Um, I guess people who hate it can be, too.)

(view spoiler)

I wish the authors would at least post about the book on their blog. They usually share tons of excerpts from upcoming books, but nothing for this one yet!

I'm counting on you to tell me when they do shared excerpts!!!

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments Ha! I'll do my best to obnoxiously announce it everywhere. Or at least on Twitter!

I sort of think they're not even writing it yet considering their immediate KD edit turnaround. Or they just started.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments Jess wrote: "I sort of think they're not even writing it yet considering their immediate KD edit turnaround. Or they just started."

I'm pretty sure they're not. This is why I didn't think it would be out this year.

Unless they snuck wrote it as the same time they wrote the first one?

message 45: by Jess (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jess | 37 comments Mod
No, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on their site that they wouldn't be starting it until they finished Magic Shifts. I could be making that up. But it's a fairly specific hallucination for me to have had.

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments I don't remember that at all. Which . . . doesn't mean anything, ha!

message 47: by Alix (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alix | 12 comments Confirming what Jess said: just read on their site that they "are planning for it to be a trilogy and we will begin working on the second, as yet untitled book, as soon as we finish Magic Shifts.". We already have a title so I'm hoping that means they kinda started it? Magic Shifts comes out mid-August so it doesn't leave that much time to finish book 2 and I might cry if they push back the release...

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments There was the excerpt at the back of this one, so that's a good sign, right?

message 49: by Jess (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jess | 37 comments Mod
It wasn't long enough. /whines

Katie (katayla) | 41 comments It didn't have enough making out.
