Hello and welcome to Team Roswell!

Have you seen either of the series, old or newer? Personally, I prefer the older series but have to admit that the newer one wasn't all bad either ;-)

Once you have found your way to this thread, please post a link to your Uno shelf and feel free to introduce yourselves. Tell us as much or as little as you'd like to. No need to go into detail if you do not wish to!

Please read the rules carefully if you haven't played before. It looks more daunting than it is, I promise! Uno is really easy once you get started. If after reading the rules you still have questions, feel free to ask! I'm here to help. The veterans of the challenge will also be able to answer questions should I not be around (I do have to sleep some time after all hehe).

On our team spreadsheet, you can already see our cards for the month of February. Have a look, browse through your books, and see what kind of cover colours you can come up with that fit the cards ;-)

If you read a fabulous book recently, do let the team know! Maybe someone might like to pick that one up to read as a reverse?

Most importantly though - and then I'm going to stop rambling, I promise - HAVE FUN! Uno is a fun and social challenge with (usually) lots of chatter in the team threads.

Happy reading!

LaurLa | 1005 comments I'm here!!! And here is my shelf
pbba-uno

A little about me -

I'm married, have 2 grown sons and a new-ish (July 2024) daughter in law... finally those days of becoming a grandma are getting closer! Maybe.

Anyway, I also have 1 furrbaby but he's not so much a baby as a crotchedy old man now. But we love him!

I read all romance all the time... any genre. Don't love YA, some NA or high fantasy but I read them if needs must! My favorites would probably be romantic suspense or sports romance. Love pnr too!

My most recent favorite books:
Nobody's Perfect by Sally Kilpatrick Fugitive Telemetry (The Murderbot Diaries, #6) by Martha Wells

message 9: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hellooooo :-D

Love that you say you read all romance all the time and then one of your recent favourites is a sci-fi hehehe.

Still need to try the first Murderbot and see if it's for me. Some day, some day ;-) This year I want to read as many of my owned books as possible without adding too many more to my shelves. I already see myself failing however as I got a bookshop gift voucher for my birthday *grin*

LaurLa | 1005 comments Eldarwen wrote: "Love that you say you read all romance all the time and then one of your recent favourites is a sci-fi hehehe."

Yeah, that is kind of weird... but then, that's me! I just love the voice of Murderbot/SecUnit, they have a very dry wit and humor. The story arc is sort of cool too! And nope, no romance, although I'd say there might be some romantic feelings for Dr Mensah but Murderbot wouldn't recognize them as such.

Jade | 96 comments I'm so excited for Uno and really happy to meet all of you.
I'm Jade, mom of five and wife to my high school sweetheart (30 years this year).
Here is my Uno shelf:

I read a bit of everything, except for horror. My perimenopausal brain turns it into the weirdest dreams. My comfort zone is historical fiction and sci-fi.
Here are a couple from my Uno shelf last year I highly recommend.
Weyward by Emilia Hart The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

Also, I haven't seen any of the Roswell series. I'm a Quantum Leap and Firefly kinda gal.

LaurLa | 1005 comments I really enjoyed The Seven Year Slip last year too!

green | 6 comments Hello, my name is Sunny! I'm from the US. Here is my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I've participated in a team challenge before but this is my first time doing the UNO challenge. I did have a question. If we start reading a book in January, but finish it in February, is that okay? As in, it's the end date that counts?

I'm excited to participate and I hope I can be helpful! Please feel free to advise me or correct me if I make any missteps in the beginning!

My favorite genres are fantasy, thrillers, and classics. I've been trying to experiment more with the sci-fi and romance genre, but am not totally swayed yet lol. Also this is my first time hearing about Roswell the series, I'll have to look into it :)

message 15: by Steven (new)

Steven Kennick | 19 comments HI Everyone! My name is Steven, I'm 35 years old, a dad to an amazing 8 year old daughter, and have been married 11 years to an incredible woman (who encouraged me to play this year and is on a different team).

Here is a link to my Uno Shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I read a bit of everything, but tend to lean towards fantasy, sci-fi, heartwarming books, tear jerkers, or existential ones that makes you think hard about life:

My Goodreads entries for the last few years are going to look a little bare - I have been tracking things in my Notion profile instead, but some of my favorite books from the last few years are:
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin Before the Coffee Gets Cold (Before the Coffee Gets Cold, #1) by Toshikazu Kawaguchi Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

I am excited to play this year!

Jamie (TheRebelliousReader) (iambrucewayne) | 163 comments Hello team! I'm so excited. This will be my first time participating in this particular challenge but I'm a pretty quick learner so I'll try to keep the questions to a minimum. LOL.

I'm Jamie. I'm from Texas and I will read just about anything. Romance is my main go to though but I also love horror and literary fiction as well. Never seen Roswell but I love Firefly and am a huge fan of Doctor Who and Star Trek (currently rewatching Voyager).

Can't wait to start this! Here's my Uno Shelf

message 17: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hello hello everyone and welcome to the team!

Quite a few Firefly lovers on the team here hehe. I have to admit that I've still not watched that though it's been on my list for... well.. many many moons now hehe. I did see Serendipity, which was a spin-off film or the prequel..? I can't quite remember.

Don't worry if you guys have questions about the challenge, it's normal the first time with any team challenge, but you'll see, it's very easy and you'll get the hang of it very, very quickly! :-)
The rules aren't difficult - they are also linked in one of the posts above for easy access if you want to freshen up your memory about which cards go with which letters. You'll get the hang of it in no time :-)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments green wrote: "I did have a question. If we start reading a book in January, but finish it in February, is that okay? As in, it's the end date that counts?"

No, only books started after the challenge begins can be used.

So anything you started on or after 1st February can be used for UNO, no matter when you finish it. If you start a book in February but only finish in March or in April, that will count as it was started and finished within the dates of the challenge.

But anything started before the challenge starts cannot be used. So finish up those books you have on the go before 1st Feb! ;-))

VNerdbooks (v_nerdbooks) | 396 comments Helloooooo
VNerd here, I know a few of you here already :o)

I am a mood reader so I never know what i'm going to read until i pick it up, so making a TBR is a waste of time for me as i'll never stick to it lol

I read mostly thrillers, but i love a bit of everything really *except* fantasy which i can not get into at all, i've tried so many times, and i wish i could love them, but it's a huge nope for me!

I'm currently working my way through the Will Trent series which i'm really enjoying, i started book 5 yesterday, and i think if Will and Sarah don't get together soon i'm going to start flipping tables haha

I am pretty much exclusively an audiobook reader and get through a couple a week.

My shelf - UNO 2025

message 21: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Uuuh, Will Trent! I've read the first two so far and am enjoying them a lot.

Hellooooo V!

message 22: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Alright!

Now that we're aaaaalmost all here - Angela should find her way here soon :-) - let's get down to a little business, shall we?

Here are our Normal Cards for this month:

0 5
1 5
2 6
3 11
4 6
5 8
6 10
7 9
8 6
9 7
Skip 6
Reverse 5
Wild 2

These will fill automatically as you read the books you want to read.
The only ones we really need to pay a little attention to are the Reverse cards - have a look through fellow team members' shelves, maybe you'll find something they've read that you would like to read as well. Or, if there is a book you really want to read in February, ask the team if maybe someone has read it before :-)

These are our Colour Cards for this month:

3 Green
4 Red
4 Blue
9 Blue
0 Yellow
6 Red
4 Yellow
8 Yellow

Wild Draw 4 -
Wild Draw 4 -

They aren't all too difficult for this month, phew! Hopefully we'll not have too much trouble filling them all hehe.
These are usually the cards I'd suggest getting out of the way at the beginning of the month, so we won't have to worry about them anymore going forward - especially after mid-month when we'll get a little surprise ;-)

Have a look through the books you'd like to read - moody or planned :-) - and let us know what you could potentially cover from this list.

message 23: by VNerdbooks (new)

VNerdbooks (v_nerdbooks) | 396 comments I have no idea what i'll be reading but i'll let you know when i do LOL

message 24: by Eldarwen (last edited Jan 20, 2025 04:35AM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments And one more from me and then I'll stop spamming the thread haha.

I could cover the following colour cards.

3 Green - Hollowpox The Hunt for Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #3) by Jessica Townsend (#3 in series)
4 Blue - Frostheart (Frostheart, #1) by Jamie Littler (title - word count is 73k+)
9 Blue - Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng (author last name)
6 Red - Girls of Riyadh by Rajaa Alsanea (character names starting with S)

These are options and I am not married to any of them, so I can pick up whatever is needed. I rarely plan my reads. The only book per month that I do plan is the one for my real life book club and I don't know what the cover of our February read looks like yet.

Angela | 655 comments Good morning from frigid Florida! :)

I have played Uno in the past but took off a few years due to work travel. I am excited to play again this year and see that the rules have slightly changed so I will need to do a refresher.

Unfortunately, I have not watched Roswell but will make sure over the next few months that I at least start the series.

My reading tastes are all over the board. I am a mood reader who enjoys everything from thrillers to fantasy to romance with lit fiction coming in as my favorite genre. I am here for all the book recs you throw my way.

Some of my favorites from last year are:

Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova

Good Material by Dolly Alderton

All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker

Summer Fridays by Suzanne Rindell

I look forward to this season of Uno and picking up book recs from the team!

9 Blue (author) The Happy Couple by Naoise Dolan

6 Red (character) Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera

4 Red (character) The Bone Shard Daughter (The Drowning Empire #1) by Andrea Stewart I think this qualifies as enough red but TBD

message 33: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hello and welcome Angela!

The team is now complete, woohoo! :-)

I should probably mention that I'm one of the strict captains when it comes to cover colours haha. Boneshard Daughter is very much on the limit of being over 50%, but if you end up reading it one way or another, I'd love to hear what you think as it's on my TBR as well.

I feel you...
I have issues picking up a lot of hyped books as well, especially because they so very often fall short for me and then I'm disappointed :-/

message 35: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 1005 comments Am I reading it right, we'll have 5 reverse cards in February? That seems a bit higher than normal. But maybe I'm misremembering... the years of challenges tend to run together!

Maybe that means it's time you dip into Murderbot, E! 😁 The first one is pretty short at 150-ish pages...

Here are some color cards I can look at:

3 Green
Devil's Gate (Elder Races, #4.6) by Thea Harrison - author Harrison

4 Red
Reckless Nights in Rome by C.C. MacKenzie (maybe ?) - character Nico Ferranti
Dirty Rowdy Thing (Wild Seasons, #2) by Christina Lauren - character Finn Roberts

4 Blue
Breaking Badger (Honey Badger Chronicles, #4) by Shelly Laurenston - character Finn Malone

9 Blue
Adverse Possession (The Anna Albertini Files #3) by Rebecca Zanetti - character Nick Basanelli
No Kissing under the Boardwalk (Barefoot William Beach) by Kate Angell - title

0 Yellow
Bananapants by Penny Reid - standalone
Take a Hint, Dani Brown (The Brown Sisters, #2) by Talia Hibbert - character Zafir Ansari

6 Red
The Heart Principle (The Kiss Quotient, #3) by Helen Hoang (maybe a reverse) - character Anna Sun
If I Were You (Inside Out, #1) by Lisa Renee Jones (also, a reverse) - character Sara McMillan

4 Yellow
Second Chance (Agent Melanie Ward, #2) by Kate Mathis - character Finn Parker

8 Yellow
Light Her Fire (Private Pleasures, #2) by Samanthe Beck (maybe?) - character Ellie Swan

Some Reverses I could commit to:
Sanctuary - Elderwen
If I Were You - Jamie
Wicked Fall - VNerd

5 is not that many, actually. There were times we had more. But who knows what the randomiser will give us in the coming months?

Sanctuary is a fun one :-) Roman is awesome. Not too long either since it's a novella.

And maaaaaybe I really should finally dip into Murderbot hehe. But you know what the annoying bit about that is? Either the books are expensive or they're sold out! Can't even find all of them second-hand, hmm.

message 39: by VNerdbooks (new)

VNerdbooks (v_nerdbooks) | 396 comments 4 of our team have private profiles so that we can't view their bookshelves, can they be changed? otherwise I'm picking everything from E and LaurLa Lol

message 40: by Eldarwen (last edited Jan 21, 2025 09:13AM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Oookay, so this is what I've done for the colour cards so far:

3 Green - Eldarwen - Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow
4 Red - LaurLa - Dirty Rowdy Thing
4 Blue - Steven - The Bright Sword
9 Blue - Angela - The Happy Couple
0 Yellow - LaurLa - Bananapants
6 Red -
4 Yellow - Angela - Martyr!
8 Yellow -

Hollowpox The Hunt for Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #3) by Jessica Townsend Dirty Rowdy Thing (Wild Seasons, #2) by Christina Lauren The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman The Happy Couple by Naoise Dolan Bananapants by Penny Reid Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar

Wild Draw 4 -
Wild Draw 4 - covered by Draw 2 - duplicating 4 Yellow

I'll happily not read the Green one if someone else has a 3 Green they're absolutely wanting to read and so everyone can have a colour card if they want :-)

We have fairly few Wild Draw 4 cards this round and can cover one of them with a Draw 2 card, yay! But no worries, we will get more colour cards in the coming months ;-)

=====

* LaurLa, maybe the stand-alone? The other one has an H author and could potentially come in handy in March or April :-)

What's the call on the maybe's I had on the list - just so I know whether to hold off on them for future months. If they're a no-go, then I'll note that and not put them up again.

Reckless Nights in Rome by C.C. MacKenzie for red?
Light Her Fire (Private Pleasures, #2) by Samanthe Beck for yellow

If so I could use it for Yellow 8 as one of the MCs names starts with E.
