Theresa | 15973 comments Young sons of the aristocracy are being murdered and left butchered in public places with odd items shoved in their mouths. The only clue is that the items in their mouths related to lines of a John Donne poem. Devlin is asked to assist and soon finds himself investigating the tragic events from 5 years earlier on a ship from Indian to the UK. In the meantime, his lover Kat Boylen has troubles of her own, ones that imperil her own secrets and force her to leave Devlin. As if that's not enough, the auther reveals some secrets that swirl around Devlin and his family, but not all.

This is such a fantastic series with great characters, interesting plot lines, all against the background of London during the Peninsular Wars and all the political tenuousness and machinations that an unfit king and a regent provide.

Robin P | 6024 comments I love this series! Usually I read a series a little at a time, but I read this one back to back a few years ago until I got to the end of what was available. The last few years, I had to wait for each new book. I believe this spring will be the final book in the series and will reveal some of the secrets maintained throughout.

The characters are great and the books highlight political and social issues of the time.

Theresa | 15973 comments @Robin - did you ever read the Julian Kestrel series by Kate Ross? There are only 4 as she died very young. I kept thinking about the similarities though they are different. I might need to reread them - I still have my original hardcovers. First is Cut to the Quick. If you have not read them, keep in mind for when this series ends.

Jgrace | 3995 comments I've read all of this C.S. Harris series. It does get a bit repetitive with the end of the war with Napoleon, but I still enjoy the tangled lives of the characters.

I just checked out that Kate Ross series. All four books are available on kindle for about $7. Thanks for the suggestion!

Correction. The listing is misleading. Only the first book is available on kindle.

I wondered - thanks for checking. I'm sure you can find used copies quite inexpensively and it's possible some local public libraries will have print copies still on their shelves.

I have read a couple of those. They didn't grab me the way this series did but I could try it again.
