They called to her heart and I'm glad that Sam listened. Nick is a wonderful person to take this on at this time.
I think it was more maternal instinct than anything. Sam sees kids that need her help. Their parents have been killed and she knows that she and Nick can make a home for them until custody of the children is figured out. I think this was her primary concern. Being a cop investigating the murder of their parents was secondary. I'm sure it was a lot easier questioning them at her home than bringing them to the station or visiting a foster home to ask questions.
