I have started it, because I'm reading for fewer challenges than you, but I've just begun today.

I've just started this right now. I kinda like that the Prince is doing commoner things and sneaking out. What a 17-year-old thing to do.

Yeah with an X I will also be this week but I've still got to read James first then can probably pick it up.

It'll probably take me a few days to read it. i'll probably read some more in between. Since its an actual book and not Kindle, I can't read when I'm getting ready to sleep. :)

This is definitely YA on one hand, and on the other, it's way hornier than lots of YA. Prince Xian is definitely DTF.

I'm about 1/3 through, and it's going to be really hard to resolve this conflict--good thing it's a mythic retelling or it would never work. Magic helps.

I am liking it so far, even though it is way outside of my normal read. It fit the prompt, was in my 125 for 25 tbr, and I teach the Lady White Snake opera, or I don't think I'd have ever picked it up. I'm glad I'm reading with friends.

I haven't got to where they met yet, but this will be interesting. Zhen used his power to save Qing so he needs to be replenished...I wonder what that does for saving Xian mom? I assume that will be part of the problem...other than the obvious.

Unexpected twist! Things seemed to be resolving too quickly, but now there’s a new mysterious character!

Prince Xian is definitely DTF should be the tagline lol.

I've never heard of the Opera/myth so this is all very new to me, which makes the world building very interesting, although it is a little lacking (not incredibly so, just in a YA we want to get to the romance way). I've read Fake Dates and Mooncakes by this author before and I like her style, though it does lean a little more YA.

Xian doesn't really see the nuances, it seems to me, and Zhen is a bit of a pushover. I'm not sure what chapter I'm on--about 2/3 through.

(view spoiler)[I'm wondering both how evil Fahei (I think I spelled that wrong) the scientist friend is going to end up being and whether or not the tortoise he has in a cage is going to end up helping Zhen out. I feel like Fahei wouldn't have a tortoise if it wasn't going to be important. I'm also really curious about Qing, Feng, and Wang. (hide spoiler)]

I read Mooncakes and that's what made me want to read this (plus subject matter.

How is this matching up with the original? I read a review that said the original is very much about female empowerment so that’s a large departure (granted, it was from someone unhappy that this was being written at all)

There really is no original--there are like eleventeen different versions. But the story is basically the same. The version that review talks about is the Gang of Four/Madame Mao/Communist version, and since it was part of the Cultural Revolution (that resulted in labor re-education camps, political prisoners, executions, and famine as well as gender equality), I have trouble getting really excited about it.

The more traditional versions are more typical femme fatale evil sexy women.

I finished and very much ended up enjoying it. There were some big twists at the end and it kept it going when I was unsure how that was going to happen.

I had a hard time getting into this, but I did make it all the way through. I love a good happy ending and it doesn't get better than a resurrected lover who gets to be with you after he died to save your mom.

I still have like 40 pages to go… I did not see Fahai being the tortoise!
