When they corner Zeke, the man who hired the teens to break into Josie’s home, she recognizes him as the man she knew as Needle when she was growing up. Given that he was instrumental in protecting her as a child, why was he willing to betray her this way?

He is a druggie. He might have protected Josie as a child, but that didn't mean he was above paying to have her house trashed. My question was: who paid him?

Drug addicts will do anything to get a fix, including betraying someone who trusted them in the past.

Sad but true - willing to do whatever to get their fix.
