On the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Virgil Wounded Horse is commonly known as an enforcer. He can be counted on to avenge wrongs done to the Native Americans that the police tend to overlook. This time his own 14-year-old nephew Nathan is caught up in major trouble. Nathan had unwisely decided to try drugs for the first time and was soon enmeshed in an FBI sting operation to find the dealers who were targeting school children. Virgil was understandably wary of the FBI's ability to keep Nathan safe so Virgil and his girlfriend Marie did their own undercover investigation to find the drug pushers. They were not surprised to learn that one of them was an old acquaintance from school who was a mean bully even that many years ago. Virgil is determined to find justice for Nathan and stop the rapidly growing influx of drugs onto the reservation.
The author is a member of the Lakota tribe and writes realistically about life on a reservation. This novel was the recipient of numerous awards including a nomination for an Edgar. It is an interesting story about a man who has fought his own demons throughout his life and is now fighting demons for others. His love for his sister's orphaned son Nathan drives the story and his relationship with girlfriend Marie is lovely.
