Shelly | 956 comments When he is diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 36, Dr. Paul Kalanithi becomes the patient facing death and not the doctor treating patients facing death. Through his journey, Paul focuses on what is important to him in order to give meaning to the time he has left. Of course, he doesn't know how much time he has left, and as his disease progresses, what is important to him changes.
Paul is a scientist, husband, father, son, writer, and a man of great intellect. He brings all those roles to this book. He weaves philosophy and classic literature into his discussions. Luckily, most of these discussions are short and do not dive too deeply into complex topics. It was just enough to keep me interested and awake. The book is short. That allowed me to get in, get out and take some ideas and thoughts with me. I am glad that I read it. You know it is going to be sad but yet it is also very uplifting and inspiring.
