This book tells the story of the first attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1922. Whilst reading this, what struck me most was just how close this attempt was to being successful, despite some members of the group having seemingly very little idea of how to prepare for the challenge awaiting them. This book has clearly been thoroughly researched, and a clear picture of some of the men involved in the attempt comes through, but I did struggle with the writing style, which often felt as though the author was making notes for himself in a journal and so what should have been an exciting tale of an adventure was a really dry read.

You may have had your fill of this expedition, but if you or others want to read an epic adventure story in the vein of "non-fiction that reads like fiction", I can highly recommend:Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest by Wade Davis, which I gave 5 stars. It covers Mallory's 3 expeditions: 1921, 1922, and 1924.
