What are your feelings about Gabriel? As a character? As a person? Did your feelings change from the beginning to the end?

UGH. I wish Gabe had never come back. I do think he deserved to know that he had a son, but he absolutely ruined everything by not pursuing Beth after she left in college and then returning and pursuing her while she is married! I was screaming at him the whole book to just go away and leave them alone. I think it's easy to say that he brought out happiness in Beth, but it was at the expense of her marriage and inevitably Frank and Jimmy's lives. It's easy to come in as an outsider and offer different things to someone when you don't have to worry about the day-to-day stressors of a marriage.
