Steinbeck, who is in my top 3 favorite authors, tell the story of a family forced from their home due the dust bowl and the great depression to find work and a life in California. This journey is met with obstacle and trial after obstacle and trial. With every step towards California, they take two steps deeper into poverty and futility.

My favorite of the story is telling of the corporations and banks who foreclose on the farmland in Oklahoma and force the farmers off their land. The image of a man with his family watching his home being torn down while holding a rifle is heart wrenching. The futility of that scene. The means to fight but no one to fight against. It's just a faceless corporation.

The themes Steinbeck develops of poverty and injustice is one that hold true today.
