I was a Boston-based business journalist, with no nonprofit experience, when I started an award-winning organization called Budget Buddies (now Women's Money Matters), which provides financial coaching to women living on low incomes. I've now written a book about lessons learned during my experience to encourage others to make meaningful change in their community -- from nonprofits and small businesses to personal passion projects.

Such projects have become especially important at this challenging time for our country.
