What if a tech bracelet is invented that requires your birth certificate and the that of your parent as well to prove that you are a "proper" American. Then make the bracelet mandatory for paying utilities, renting a home, working your job or even to order from a restaurant. Soon there is an obvious visual cue as to who "belongs" in the US.

Iris (originally Ines until her teacher Americanized her name to save herself the hassle of trying to pronounce it correctly) has always tried believed that being a good American is to present herself as white as possible- follow all the rules, believe in safety as the ultimate justification for any action, wear neutral colors and small jewelry. After leaving her husband to start fresh with her daughter, her otherness manifests itself in front of her new house no matter how hard to she tries to blend in despite the new bracelet law. She has to come to terms with her family, choices and that she is part of the other no matter how hard she follows the rules.

The writing is a bit choppy but the concept is as thoughtful as it is scary.
