first GR wouldnt let me post at all, saying I had to be a member to do so. I tried again and got to the last line but GR cut me off. {was able to correct this on the laptop}My surgery went ok yesterday and if I can just rest for the next few days the worst may be over.
Reading is difficult but I have an appropriate book Still Life by a feisty woman approaching 80, and a few audiobooks to help me sleep.
I do agree with your poem, Magdelanye. That is a perfect way to spend some time.I can't post much right now. I only have connection through my phone, which is difficult to type on.
Is that book you are reading Still Life by Louise Penny?
More when I'm home.
glad to hear from you PetraThe book I was referring to is Still Life at Eighty: The Next Interesting Thing by Abigail Thomas
which I finished last night. I was trying to make it last but the segments are short and compelling and she is so wonderful. Now I must search out her other works.
Luckily, I have also been engrossed in the amazing Wizard of the Crow by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o. Day 4 after surgery and I am now feeling well enough to read more than a couple of pages before falling asleep.
should mention the other book I have been slogging through The Space of the World: Can Human Solidarity Survive Social Media and What If It Can't? by Nick Couldry. Not that it's not interesting, just a lot of tech facts and mythology.
Now I want to know what everybody else here is reading
Ahh....I did wonder about the Louise Penny book. I don't think you've ever posted reading a murder mystery type story. Abigail Thomas sounds like an interesting person. I'm glad to hear that her writing is interesting as well.
I've lately finished The Mayor of Casterbridge and Robinson Crusoe. Both are group reads I joined. I enjoy Thomas Hardy's writing and I've never read Daniel Defoe.
I enjoyed the Hardy book, not so much the Defoe book.
I read and really enjoyed an alternative history book, Ha'penny, last month. It's the second book of a trilogy, which I didn't realize when I started it.
I am now reading the first book, Farthing and enjoying it just as much. The series is what I'd call good beach reading. Light, entertaining, compelling and interesting.
The books are stand alone in story. The detective is the character that runs through both books, joining them into a series.
Back from Spain. Still reading: The Stranger by Camilla Läckberg. Sword of Fire by Katharine Kerr and A Fortress of Grey Ice by J.V. Jones
Abigail Thomas is great. Oh, not everybody will think so, but I think our crew might find her down to earth delivery quite refreshing. Short reflections can be read alongside another book so as not to give in to racing through it.Just finished Wizard of the Crow by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o. This was delight of another order, an African Brave New World it occurs to me..
Finally getting back to writing reviews although I feel a bit rusty and tounge-tied these days. (At least I can eat a wider range of food) I was quite gratified to have my review of This Is It: A Novel in Stories by Matthew Fox liked by Mathew Fox. This is not the Mathew Fox I know and love, and I mention this in my review, but I liked the book and of course it is always a bit of a thrill when an author likes your review.
easeful August is all but over...cloudy and cool this morning. What are the best books for this time of year?I had one big one for this transition, and seeing as Ive adored her previous works I was confident I would love this too. Well, no. After an intruiging start it quickly got cheesy and by the time I realized what this was, around page 110, I slammed it shut. Vampire erotica is definitely not my thing.
