message 18: by Theresa, Readathons (last edited Sep 28, 2025 11:27PM) (new)

Theresa | 861 comments My answers to the discussion question from message 3.
1.) How are your reading challenges going so far? Are there books you are excited about for this readathon? Which one(s)?
I'm on track to reach and exceed my 2025 reading goal. My 2025 goal is lower than those from recent years. A lot has been going on in life. I'm planning to borrow the audio book Murder on The Girls' Night Out, for the readathon. Maybe I can manage more.

2.) Are there annual events in your area that you like to attend for the fall season? What are they?
There are many of events going on nearby. It's unlikely I'll go to any.

3.) What is your favorite spooky book from childhood? Are there any favorites from adulthood?
I remember "Gus Was A Friendly Ghost" from many years ago.
I really liked "Lock Every Door." I read it in 2024.

I have one more comment. I think answering these questions may mean I'm talking to myself, since I am the person who posted them. LOL!

-------------------------------

My totals for the entire readathon:

Book: "Game On," by Janet Evanovich .....50 pages
Audio book: "Murder On The Girl's Night Out," by Anne George.....58 minutes

JennH | 1116 comments 1.) How are your reading challenges going so far? Are there books you are excited about for this readathon? Which one(s)?
I'm doing great in meeting my reading goal, but I'm a bit behind in some of my yearly challenges. I'm hoping to check off a few books with this readathon. Fingers crossed. It's a bit of a busy weekend and I'm not sure where I'll find time to squeeze some reading time, but I couldn't miss a readathon!

2.) Are there annual events in your area that you like to attend for the fall season? What are they?
We're looking forward to apple picking and trick or treating.

3.) What is your favorite spooky book from childhood? Are there any favorites from adulthood?
I loved Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery by James Howe when I was a kid. As an adult, I don't really read spooky, scary stuff much anymore, but I loved Phantoms by Dean Koontz (I used to be a huge fan of Dean Koontz but haven't read him in ages) and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson.

1.) How are your reading challenges going so far? Are there books you are excited about for this readathon? Which one(s)?

My reading challenge is going much better than expected! I have found a great momentum this year for reading even with a few reading slumps here and there. I have also found audio books to be helpful on my commute to work although I am very particular in audiobooks I read since auditory processing is harder for me than physically reading a book. I might use Seed by Ania Ahlborn but @ the pace I'm going at I might finish before this weekend! But I have many spooky books, lined up especially since it's finally fall!

2.) Are there annual events in your area that you like to attend for the fall season? What are they?

I love attending pumpkin patches, haunted corn mazes and driving around to see the leaves. And my bday is Halloween so it's perfect for fall spooky/cozy vibes 🎃

3.) What is your favorite spooky book from childhood? Are there any favorites from adulthood?
I LOVED Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, those terrified me as a kid and I still remember them very vividly! I also liked Series of Unfortunate Events, it triggered nightmares of Count Olaf.

As for present adulthood I love anything Stephen King, Ania Ahlborn, Nick Cutter, Freida McFadden, T. Kingfisher, Stephen Graham Jones...

That's an awesome birthday to have! You must go all out on Halloween. I knew a couple of people whose kids were born on Halloween. The Halloween birthday parties were so much fun!

I discovered T Kingfisher not too long ago. I was apprehensive at first but her kind of horror I can deal with. 😊 And I loved finding out that it was the pen name of Ursula Vernon, whose graphic novels my kids had read.

Susan | 638 comments 1.) How are your reading challenges going so far? Are there books you are excited about for this readathon? Which one(s)?

I've blown my reading goal out of the water! The reading challenges provided in the group has kicked my reading into full gear! I've been looking forward to reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue...I'll start that one Friday!

2.) Are there annual events in your area that you like to attend for the fall season? What are they?

My daughter was born on Halloween, so fall time is special for us. She's going to be 14 this year tho, so getting her to go to a pumpkin patch may not happen. I found an event called a Fall Time Bookstore Crawl. It's actually this weekend and I think we're going to check it out!

3.) What is your favorite spooky book from childhood? Are there any favorites from adulthood?

My favorite spooky book from childhood is Stephen King's Carrie. I watch the movie long before I ever read it, but that was a creepy story especially for a child/preteen.

2.) Are there annual events in your area that you like to attend for the fall season? What are they? In the UK, we have Bonfire Night on 5 November which has fireworks and yummy warming snacks

3.) What is your favorite spooky book from
childhood? Are there any favorites from
adulthood? I'm not really into spooky books so can't think of a favourite from childhood. As an adult, I quite Christina Henry's dark fairytale retellings which can be a bit spooky such as Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook. I may be reading another book by Christina Henry during this weekend, will see how I get on with Legendborn first

Bonfire Night sounds fun! I hope you enjoy it, if you're planning to go!

We have a fire pit out back. Fireworks are not allowed in November, around here. They're only allowed for a week or so when Independence Day is near.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 42 comments This is my first readathon so I have a couple of questions
Do we have to do one book for each prompt before repeating any of the prompts?
I just wondered how limited / unlimited the prompts can be - for example for spooky I was thinking it might have to be witches / halloween . But I have Jamaica Inn which is definitely ghostly and spooky

The individual readathons are more laid back than team readathons.
You may repeat prompts or pick and choose prompts. Even the discussion questions are optional.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 42 comments 1.) How are your reading challenges going so far? Are there books you are excited about for this readathon? Which one(s)?

My reading challenges are going well I am probably going to exceed my annual goal. I do think I am in a bit of a rut reading wise so I am looking forward to trying something in Dark Academia If I can get hold of it. I also Have Jamaica Inn which I have read before but is a delicious classic

2.) Are there annual events in your area that you like to attend for the fall season? What are they?

Halloween and Bonfire night do not tempt me to events but I am busy and am looking forward to a short break in Shakespeare country and a visit to The Globe theatre

3.) What is your favorite spooky book from childhood? Are there any favorites from adulthood?

I don't think I was ever brave enough as a child to read a spooky book but i love Something Wicked This Way Comes

Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) | 4775 comments Day one of the readathon (yesterday) for me and I managed to read 179 pages of Legendborn. I don't have work today or tomorrow so more time for reading!

LinaVer | 480 comments Decided to answer the questions before starting reading today 🙂

1.) How are your reading challenges going so far? Are there books you are excited about for this readathon? Which one(s)?

I’m good on meeting my 52 books this year goal but I’ve been completely sidetracked by arcs and buddy reads and have not reached other goals, haha. 😅 I’m also realising I’m such a mood reader, so I’m not going to be setting so many genre/topic challenges for myself next year.
I’m very excited about the readathon! I know I’m not going to be able to read as much to cover all prompts probably, but setting aside a few days just to read is such a treat. I’m quite excited about reading Bewitched, a sequel to a book that I read before Halloween last year. And if I have time, The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer just because it’s Twin Peaks, and I was apparently born yesterday and didn’t know there are also books!

2.) Are there annual events in your area that you like to attend for the fall season? What are they?

They’re screening HP films this autumn and I’ve never seen them in the cinema, so I’m going, even though I’m quite conflicted about it (because of the author).🙈 We also have annual village flea/backyard markets where I stock up on books haha 😂 and some picking days in the farms. 🍐🍎

3.) What is your favorite spooky book from childhood? Are there any favorites from adulthood?

Before I got into King, I loved re-reading Krabat & the Sorcerer's Mill about an enchanted mil, brotherhood and crows. It has such a dark atmosphere and this folklore feel, and always breaks my heart no matter how often I’ve read it. Maybe I should read it for the readathon 🤔

My first readathon isn't going as I had envisioned. I scheduled the long weekend up at our cabin on the calendar. My husband and granddaughter tagged along...lol I know, poor me! So not reading continuously as planned but not entirely sorry about it either.

There are a few fall events I enjoy attending. Scarecrow Fest and Cranberry Fest here in northeast Wisconsin come to mind as a must. The food at Cranberry Fest is to die for and thinking about how much my grandchildren love the games, prizes, and face-painting at Scarecrow Fest brings a smile to my face!! These community events really bring people together-and that's heartwarming too!

When I was three, I loved the book The Witch Next Door by Norman Bridwell, so much so that I had it memorized and people thought I could read. I have given this book as a gift to nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Side note: I still have it memorized!!
Now a days, I prefer to read a cozy mystery or psychological thriller.

JennH | 1116 comments Whew! Didn't think I had time this weekend to read much for the readathon. But I just managed it!

I loved reading about all your local events. Cider and apple picking, a trip to the Globe Theatre (wow!), screenings of old movies (I loved being able to watch Pride & Prejudice for their 20th anniversary this year), village flea markets, Scarecrow Fest and Cranberry Fest all sound like so much fun!

To all the first timers, I hope you had fun! So much so that you'll join in when we have the team readathons, too!

Thank you for another great readathon, Theresa!

message 45: by Theresa, Readathons (new)

Theresa | 861 comments My reading didn't quite go as planned, this weekend. I'll add my own little bit of progress tomorrow.

I feel like this has been a successful readathon and I hope you all will join us again for the first team readathon of 2026!

message 46: by LinaVer (new)

LinaVer | 480 comments I didn’t have as much time as I wanted to read, so only finished 2 prompts (and those I honestly would not count as I read graphic novels for them). But it inspired me to check out graphic novels for the first time, so that’s one personal reading goal achieved (genre exploration). I also started reading Agatha Christie for the first time (not sure if it’s my thing yet, a lot of different names and so much talking haha). And overall I had a lot of fun. Thank you for organising it Theresa!

Also, I’ve read through all your answers as well, and wow you guys have so many fun events coming up. I often wish we had so many fun autumn and Halloween events, like pumpkin patches, mazes, fests, etc. It’s not a big thing here in the area of the Netherlands I live, surprisingly, even though I live amidst big farms.
