Sam Kelly was selected out of his Ranger unit to become a member of an elite sub rosa covert unit within the US Military. His name was changed to Jack Stone and some plastic surgery performed to change his appearance. Sam Kelly 'died' in Afghanistan while on active duty. Jack Stone, just returned from 2 years deep undercover in a child trafficking case, finds himself assigned to a new case involving illegal trade in weapons, including a potential biological warfare threat against the US, located in Sam/Jack's home town of Miami. That's not such a problem, but Sam's high school girlfriend, Sophie, for whom he still carries a torch, may be involved - her boss certainly is - so Jack's orders include getting close to Sophie again but without revealing he's really Sam.

Can we all see how wrong this is going to go? Of course Sophie senses there is something familiar about Jack Stone, and since their business lunch rapidly ends when a sniper tries to take out Sophie, and the 2 of them end up on the run together, that sense of familiarity grows. There's lots of action, surprises as well, and the evolving recognition of 'Sam' by Sophie while also falling for 'Jack' is an interesting emotional arc, a variation on the second chance trope.

This was an excellent thriller with fun locations all around Miami and the Keys. I'm absolutely going to read the rest of the series. Pretty nice smut level too!
