why do writers feel the need to make the first love interest a villain in order to transition into the second love interest!! i hate it. why can’t the fmc and the first love interest naturally fall out of love/move on without ruining their character.
side note: before i read this woven kingdom by tahereh mafi, is this the case with these books two?
Agree!! Im kinda sick of the “morally grey villain love interest, enemies to lovers” trope when its so poorly done. If they’re not actively trying to k*ll each other, then they’re not enemies. And if he was seen as the villain in the fjrst book but now he’s the hero in the second book, was he ever really the villain in the first place?
WHY IS JESSICA TOWNSEND TAKING SO LONG TO WRITE BOOKS? I, I have a theory maybeeee she was writing the next books at the same time... so she can relese a heap yeahh... right. kidding i dont think she is ima just stay pissed off at her
Also I hate in romances a lot of romance books there is a whole enemy to lovers plot in 2 many books! Like can’t one day they just stumble spoon each other become friends and get 2 know each other better AND THEN fall in love? Like authors always think they are so creative with these plots but honestly it gets really boring! Like if you write romance books PLS PLS PLS! COME UP WITH SLIGHTLY MORE OG IDEAS PLS!!!
yesss this annoys me too! it feels like a lazy writing shortcut sometimes, like it’s trying to force certain dynamics and/or progress a new relationship along quickly. the same thing happens when an enemies to lovers trope isn’t executed very well. a morally grey character or villain isn’t just “he was rude once” or “he works for the opposing side but never actually does anything bad”. 🥲
totally agree with all thoughts here!! recently i finished reading a duology where the first love interest did not become a villain in order for the main character to fall in love with the second - but there was some conflict, obviously. you may enjoy it if you like chinese mythology retellings. the first book is called daughter of the moon goddess by sue lynn tan. (and after finishing the second, i can't stop thinking about this story!)
